Freedom. Missed opportunity. By Livija Lukšaitė

Every person has his own values. On each person‘s values list freedom takes a different position. However, whatever place it takes, each of us wants to feel free. Each of us wants to be unrestricted, to express our opinion, even if it is different from other. Also, every person would answer differently, if someone asked them „what is the freedom for you?“.

„May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right“ – Peter Marshall. This is one of my favorite quotes about the freedom. These days people pay a lot attention to their rights, freedom and behave without regard to others. And I think it is sad that people do not use their freedom to make a change, to create something better than they have, Why not lend a helping hand to your neighbor, make someone smile and feel good, why not try and make a difference in the world?

This topic has bothered me for a long time. I believe every person should care about what is happening in the world and take the initiative. As Albert Einstein said “the world as we have created it is a process of our thinking and it cannot be changed without changing our thinking”. So maybe we should begin changing. We have the freedom of choice, while others may not have it. We all know what is happening around us, but most of us do not even try doing something. Freedom may be immense, we can do much more than most of us commonly imagine. Let‘s be realistic, to notice the difference can take a lot of time. But can we stay calm and pretend nothing bad is happening, ignoring others and simply living our own lives selfishly? Can you?

We all have opportunities, but why don’t we make use of them? Only because it requires our time and effort, is it really so hard to bother? Just imagine, what future will await us if we move forward. What tomorrow can be, if we do our best today. In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can. Do not be afraid of going slowly, be afraid of standing still.

Instead of just hoping and wishing for a miracle, you can start doing, what might seem as “miracles” to other people. Each of us who takes the time and effort, works and believes can create a miracle. But first of all we need to be truly free. How? Just being ourselves is enough. One is not a chess figurine on a chessboard. And when you fully understand who you are and what you need in life, you will be able to understand others’ needs as well. We are all equal in the fact that we are all different. We are all the same in the fact that we will never be the same. But we have similar aspirations, we have similar dreams. It unites us.

Action acquires meaning, when it brings joy and benefits you and others and also when it helps you grow. You do not always have to make actions, which are meaningful. But life itself can be more meaningful, if the actions you do are. You decide, life is yours. It depends on you, what your tomorrow will be like. Do not miss the opportunities that you have today.
