„Breaking Bad“ review by Juta Kvederaitė 7B

I am not in danger, Skyler. I AM the danger. A guy opens his door and gets shot, and you think that of me? No! I am the one who knocks.“Walter White

formerThe storyline consists of Walt being diagnosed with Stage III cancer (don‘t worry, it‘s not really a spoiler, since it happens fairly quickly in the first season and this detail is written in almost every summary) and given only two years to live, he decides he has nothing to lose. To ensure a good, secure future for his sick son and wife, he finds a „cook-buddy“ Jesse, who was his former student, to join him on a crystal meth dealing, crime adventure. This show portrays how the drug community works and that with this very ‚cool‘ job can come dangerous obstacles, e.g. – death. Search these series up on Netflix and find out how Walt tries to hide the fact that he is a highly wanted dealer and has to hide the lung cancer from his family, his friends and most importantly – the police, while Jesse struggles with his parents and keeps running from the police and bad guys, who are after his bottom.

„Bitch“ [repeated line] – Jesse Pinkman

season. You probably can tell my plan to not be hooked on this show didn‘t work out. No regrets, though.

You choose – your family and a normal life, or being chased by the police and a scary, but at the same time exciting life?image3.jpeg

I would definitely re watch this show (in fact, I am re-watching it right now, hehe) and would also definitely recommend to anyone who hasn‘t jumped on the bandwagon yet.

„Skyler White: And why did it feel so good?

Walter White: Because it’s illegal.“

My opinion
• This film is the funniest one I have ever seen. If you like western comedies with dirty jokes I recommend it. You must see it. There are more.

A point of view on Romeo and Juliet by Livija Lukšaitė 7C

„Don‘t waste your love on somebody, who doesn‘t value it“

„Do not swear by the moon, for she changes constantly. Then your love would also change.“

„Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs.“

I think you noticed that these quotes about love. Maybe you think that love is banal? Maybe. You have the freedom to choose by yourself.

These quotes are from a poem, which was written by one of the most famous playwright: William Shakespeare.

William Shakespeare  was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist.

Romeo and Juliet. They are the main actors, who prove how strong love can be. They managed to reconcile the two families, which seemed to reconcile is impossible. They reminded us important things that we may have forgotten.

Capulet plans a feast to introduce his daughter, Juliet, who is almost fourteen, to the Count Paris who would like to marry her. By a mistake Romeo hear about the party and decides to go there. He hopes he will see his adore Rosaline but instead he meets and falls in love with Juliet. And from that moment his thoughts are only about her. He endlessly wants to marry her, but their parents will never support them. Well, this will not prevent them, they will try to achieve the purpose, they will try to implement it. Some people will help, others will try to preclude. Also it will reveal real people‘s face.

What would you do if you were in the situation like this? Would you runaway like they did? Yes, they ran away and then they married. After a while parents found them. Romeo was sent to jail. He remained in uncertainty.

The time has come when he got out of jail. He met Juliet. He saw something that surprised him. He drowned in the depths of grief.

Love can usurp life and much more. Love can hurt. But there is always the good side. Love is important. It makes us happy. I am not talking only about the girlfriends or boyfriends. Maybe you love your parents, maybe sister or brother. Maybe friends. I am sure you have the activity that you love, whatever it is. If you love it – you probably enjoy it too. That means you enjoy your life at least at that moment.

“Endangered species” by Rojus Paukštė 7A

Our country, like all the others save animals and plants that are near the line of disappearing out of our planet. We use the, “Red Book” to save our environment. And we also recycle litter, waste. How? I’ll tell you…

In our, “Red Book” we write down the species who are disappearing at the moment. Biological species written down in the book, must not be killed, so they can repopulate. We also make national parks where they can live, without minding their head about the hunters. For plants we also use the, “Red Book” and national parks so they can grow in one safe peace.

One more thing to help us save our home nature is recycling. We have three different types of recycling bins. One for paper, another for plastic, and the last one for glass. It really helps to remake, reuse items we use in our daily routine. But there are a few problems about it too. Some people don’t recycle. They are too lazy to do it. Even if they do recycle, they might put junk in the wrong bin.

That is how at least how Lithuania saves our home nature. Think of the planet that it is right now. There is no backup if our homeland dies.

“Planet Earth – a safe haven” by Lėja Mikailionytė 8B

Our planet Earth is unique among the stars. It is a safe haven for life: shielded by our atmosphere, with plenty of water and food for everyone… But not everything is going well lately in our paradise. There are a lot of problems that influence the environment, such as global warming, pollution, deforestation and many more, which are mostly caused by humans. But there are also a lot of ways in which we people can help the nature to restore its balance.

Probably most of you have heard of a new car type, that appeared recently – an electric car. Instead of petrol it uses electricity which does not pollute the environment. Although today electric cars are very expensive and need a lot of time to charge, they will get better and cheaper in the near future.
But if you do not like electric cars, then there is an alternative – a hydrogen fueled car. As the name suggest, it uses hydrogen as fuel and its’ waste after use is only water vapor. Hydrogen fueled cars are still in development, because of some problems, the main one is that hydrogen is highly combustible (it can easily explode).
One of the best ways to help our planet is to use renewable energy sources, such as sunlight, wind, ocean waves, geothermal heat... Their biggest advantages is that they are clean, renewable and quite cheap. I think that soon they will replace coal and oil and will be used worldwide.
For many years we burned coal and oil, polluting the environment, changing it and today we can see the results of our activities. Now we must fix the mistakes that we have made in the past and You, yes YOU, can help the environment too by recycling your trash. Maybe one can not do much, but by setting an example you encourage other people to follow it and in this way we can all help to safe our little paradise among the stars.

What it feels to be a bear these days by Audrė Baublytė 7D

Ben wakes up early and heads out. His family is still sleeping. His children are all cuddled up by their mother. It’s cold but he has to go hunting or his family will starve. Ben is a polar bear. Every year his life gets harder and harder, mostly because of us – humans. As more and more ice melts every year he has to swim further to reach the land after fishing. He barely made it out of the water once.

What if he won’t reach the land next year? What will his family do? What if next year while fishing his paw gets stuck in a plastic bag, one that we made and threw out? Who would be responsible for that?

Lithuanians live in a lovely country but do not seem to notice it. It could be even more beautiful if only we would cherish and take care of it. Very simple things like walking to the market instead of taking the car can make a huge difference to our planet and they are so easy to do.

Ben’s cousins from Lithuania would love to see their home become a better and healthier place to live in. We could all help Ben and his relatives. Or at least stop making their lives harder. Let’s work together and make our planet and its children healthier and happier.

That Blue Ball by Veronika Poškutė 5D

planet is nice, but if we love it more then it will be much cleaner.

arth is not very clean so we must:

Recycle the rubbish

Use an electrical cars and save electricity

Don’t throw the rubbish to the ocean

Use less trees, don’t kill them

Keep it tidy

When there was an Earth day, my friends and I learned a lot about salt. It was really fun. I think we all know that we must to save our planet. This is very important. Sometimes even in movies we can see how people save the  Earth.

So many movies are depicted in natural places. Like Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia, In to the Woods etc.

Our planet must look like this, we just need more water…

Here is a picture to see how beautiful is Earth, but it can be more beautiful 😉

I have one question to you. How much do you love Earth?

Animals matter, do we care? by Vakarė Kuklytė 7C

What is global warming? To wrap it all up, it’s increasing average temperature in Earth. Global warming is primarily a problem of too much carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere – it kind of acts like a blanket, pillow (a huge one), that covers the Earth and traps everything inside. CO2 lasts for a long time and evaporates quite slowly. The things that help us eliminate it – are the ones we cut and burn down to instead make plantations for food. Trees. If you already do not know, trees suck up carbon and release only oxygen, so not only it helps stopping the global warming, but it gives us something we are desperate to have, to be able to survive. But cutting down forests isn’t the only cause. We burn coal, oil, natural gas which also helps dioxide to accumulate.

The ozone hole

Let’s travel to Antarctica – we’ll focus on it from now on. The ozone layer has protected Earth from UV rays for nearly a billion years. It blocks the nasty rays away, so our planet doesn’t melt. BUT, because of the CO2, in some parts it started becoming narrower, which leads to the ozone layer having holes in it, and that leads to our precious glaciers melting. Now, what are the problems that will occur if we don’t do anything and the ice just fades away? Here are some:

·        The sea levels will rise. Now, some of the people may think/say “Oh, it’ll just rise a bit, what’s the big deal?” They won’t say that again when it happens. It will rise so much, that it will cover MANY countries, and HUGE parts of continents. Since we still live in Lithuania, what will happen to our country? Our country isn’t mountainous, it is flat. Lithuania is next to The Baltic Sea, which means that a huge part of our country will be underwater.  Just look at the picture, this is how Lithuania will look if the sea levels rise 80 meters only! I’m scared.

·        Fresh water. About 60% of the fresh water (ice) is in Antarctica, and if it melts, it will combine with the sour (sea) water. BOOM, we have much less limited water supplies. The supplies will run out one day, and people will just drop dead out of dehydration. Lithuania isn’t an exception.

·        Poor animals won’t have a place to stay. The animals that live in Antarctica are used to the cold climate, and the problems these poor souls will have aren’t just one:

1.     They won’t have a place to stay. As I said, these animals are used to cold climate, which means everything would be just too hot for them.

2.     The species will just disappear. We all love penguins, polar bears (actually they’re pretty dangerous), seals, whales? Well, all of them will just extinct. That’s it. No more cute animals. 🙁

#gallery-3 { margin: auto; } #gallery-3 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-3 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-3 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

  Now, when you just heard all of these sad things that will happen if we don’t do anything, here are some things you HAVE to do to prevent them from happening.

·        Recycle, recycle, and recycle. Not only you should recycle everything, and not just drop the trash together, you should also buy reusable things. If you do that, you should feel like the savior of our planet right now!

·        Drive less. Try to not use cars as often as possible. If you live far away from your job/school, just catch a bus, you’ll help our planet. But if you live quite close – come on, drive a bicycle or walk on feet! Not only it’ll help Earth, but will also exercise your legs!

·        Save electricity. When you leave your room, turn off the lights. When you have something turned on that really isn’t necessary to be, turn it OFF. It’s not that hard to just press a button or turn off a switch!

·        Plant trees. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. Just plant one!

·        Last but not least: Encourage others! One person doesn’t do much, but if you slowly get the whole world (with the help of other people, of course) doing the same, we’ll make even our own planet going green! I hope you all want to survive, right? 🙄

CLIMATE CHANGE MISCONCEPTIONS by Aleksandras Melnik 8A

When I started writing about climate change, I noticed that people know quite a lot about this topic , but it seems that a lot of that information are myths and misconceptions. So here I try to tackle just the 10 most popular that I’ve seen.

1. ‘THEY CHANGED IT TO CLIMATE CHANGE FROM GLOBAL WARMING BECAUSE IT WASN’T HAPPENING’

   Though the average global temperature is rising every year, in different areas we might see different changes in climate, and it might temporarily even get colder in some places, so to avoid confusion the term climate change is being used.

2. ‘THE PLANET ISN’T WARMING’

   Yes it is. The 10 hottest years in record were in the 21st century.

Though you might see slight drops in global temperature it has a very rapid rising tendency and there is no more real scientific debate on this question.

3. ‘EVEN IF THE EARTH IS WARMING, MAYBE THAT’S JUST THE SUN GETTING WARMER’

For the last 100 years the sun has only been emitting less heat. While the temperature has only been going up.

4. ‘HOW DO YOU KNOW IT’S CARBON DIOXIDE’S FAULT, MAYBE SOMETHING ELSE IS CAUSING IT’

   First of all, if we look at the rise of the global temperature and compare it to the rise of CO2 levels, it is obvious that they are related. Second there is an approved scientific model called the ‘Greenhouse effect’ , which explains how the CO2 in the atmosphere works as a green house trapping sunlight and causing it to bounce of, thus warming the atmosphere.

5. ‘THE HOLE IN THE OZONE LAYER CAUSES GLOBAL WARMING’

The ozone hole is a man made phenomenon, but it doesn’t cause the temperature to change. The ozone layer is a part of atmosphere rich with O3 molecules, that blocks the harmful UV radiation. Due to man made chemicals, holes in that layer started appearing and letting more and more UV radiation pass trough. This doesn’t cause the temperature to rise bat is bad for humans and may even cause skin cancer.

6. ‘THE CLIMATE JUST CHANGES NATURALLY, SO WE HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT’

The climate has been changing before, but it has been do to change in earths rotation and orbit, and the CO2 levels have never grown so rapidly before, because no one has been burning coal or other fuel.

7. ‘ALRIGHT, IT WILL GET WARMER, SO WHAT?

   As you may know the global warming isn’t the only effect of climate change. When the temperature is rising the polar ice caps are melting and all off that ice goes straight in to the ocean. From basic physics we know, that if something goes in to water, it pushes that much water out, causing the water level to rise. The same way the sea level will only be rising, and if that may not be a big threat to countries like Lithuania, this may be deadly to coastal cities and countries like Japan or the city of Los Angeles.

8. ‘THE WARMER CLIMATE WILL ONLY BE A BETTER THING FOR  PLANTS AND AGRICULTURE.

   It is true that in some areas the warmer climate may be beneficial it also causes the rise of sea levels, which means floods and then intense periods of drought, the changing air currants will cause huge storms and tornadoes.

9. ’WELL OK, BUT THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO ANYWAYS’

   This is the worst misconception of all. Though, I, personally, am not an ‘eco geek’ or a vegan, or any nature activist of that sort, but I think it is just plainly stupid to deny what’s happening and to not see that we are causing it. The major thing that humanity could do, is to stop using fossil fuels. Not all countries (like Lithuania) can survive only on sun and wing energy, but there is nuclear and thermonuclear energy. These are the areas where the world governments should be investing if they are expecting to preserve the planet for the future.

 No, just no.

Help our planet – go green! by Juta Kvederaitė 7B

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr. Seuss, The Lorax.

We all want to help our planet. But how? The answer to that is sitting right in front of us – three times a day. By going vegetarian, you can reduce the impact of climate change, rain forest destruction, and pollution, while saving water and other precious resources.

Here are a few facts about the food you put on your plate :

Raising animals for food produces more greenhouse gas emissions (gases that trap heat in the atmosphere) than all of the cars, planes, and other forms of transportation combined. So switching to a diet free of eggs, dairy and meat saves more carbon emissions (CO2) than driving a Prius car.

   In the United States, 70% of grain grown is used for animals. We could end world hunger with that food, but instead we give that food away to animal farms.

“By definition we are in the “environment” right now. “Saving it” is saving ourselves. What is so hard to understand about that?”

About 30% of Earth’s land mass is used for raising animals for food (including land used for grazing and growing feed crops).

To produce one pound of animal protein vs. one pound of soy protein, it takes about 12x as much land, 13x as much fossil fuel, and 15x as much water.

The billions of chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows who are crammed onto factory farms each year in the U.S. produce enormous amounts of methane (natural gas, the second most prevalent greenhouse gas in U.S.). “Pound for pound, the comparative impact of [methane] on climate change is 25 times greater than [carbon dioxide] over a 100-year period.”

     Why vegetarian isn’t enough – the production of dairy products necessitates the death of countless male calves that are of no use to the dairy farmer, as well as the premature death of cows slaughtered when their milk production decreases. Similarly, in the egg industry, involve the killing of the ‘unnecessary’ male chicks when they are only a day old.

Around 6mln. hectares of forest land a year an area equivalent to Latvia or twice the size of Belgium – is converted to farmland a year.

Animal waste contains many pathogens (anything that causes a disease) including salmonella, E coli, cryptosporidium, and fecal coliform, which can transfer to humans through water run-off, or manure, or touch. That makes us prone to diseases.

The meat eaters get increased chances of obesity, cancers, heart diseases and other illnesses as well as a hole in the pocket. A meat diet is generally considered twice as expensive as a vegetarian one. So why not be rich, healthy and help our planet at once by going vegan\vegetarian?

Animals eat large amounts of grain, soybeans, oats and corn; however they only produce a small amount of meat, dairy products and eggs in return.

To sum up, animal farms pollute the air, the water, use up our resources and spread cruelty to animals and much more! There has never been a better time to go green by eating green. Join me! “If you don’t like seeing pictures of violence towards animals being posted, you need to help stop the violence, not the pictures.” – Johnny Depp.

Why thermonuclear energy is important by Dominykas Dautoras 8A

The global warming is a very important issue in our world. The temperature of the planet is increasing because if the greenhouse effect in our atmosphere. The atmosphere works like a greenhouse. Some of the gases there trap the heat from the sun, but don’t let it out. These gases are called greenhouse gases and the most common one is CO2. Carbon dioxide is made when carbon is being burnt. We burn a lot of carbon when we make energy. Most countries can change the way that they make energy by using alternative energy sources such as hydroelectricity, wind power or solar power. But some of them do not have enough sunlight, the wind might be weaker and there may not be any rivers nearby. It might seem like the only choice is burning fossil fuels. That is not true. Thermonuclear power is a way to make electricity by making a nuclear fusion in very high temperatures. Nuclear fusion is the same process that makes our sun and other stars “burn”. A lot of people are scared of using nuclear power, because they think that it is very unstable and is very dangerous to our environment. This isn’t true today, because scientists have made the nuclear plants less dangerous and more efficient. Another important thing is that the old nuclear plants rely on nuclear fission which uses heavy radioactive metals and produces a lot more nuclear waste than a thermonuclear reactor would. With a lot less waste produced, thermonuclear power would help us save the environment. The only real problem with thermonuclear power is that they have not been properly tested yet. Theoretically they should work perfectly, but only a handful have been built and none of them have produced any power yet. The first reactor should be properly working in 2020-2027. I believe that we should invest into thermonuclear energy, because it is the power of our future

trees. Once I found an injured woodpecker, it didn’t seem to be aggressive or frightened and it was at that moment when I discovered that nature was my calling. When I grew up I could already detect the consequences of our actions against the nature. For example the lake near my villa – it was starting to get dirty and messy. I couldn’t watch calmly at what people have done to our beautiful lake. I started to think what we could do to save our beautiful planet from incoming devastation. Till this day I still think that we could save thousands of trees, plants and animals just by understanding the nature. But our planet hasn’t lost its charm yet. So let’s act and help her.
It is in our hands to save our small planet.

Ugnės recommendation: “Snow time”

#gallery-8 { margin: auto; } #gallery-8 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-8 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-8 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Snow time is a movie about some kids, one of them is an orphan. His daddy died in a war. Kids have a winter holiday, so they decide to play and have a real snow battle. They divide into 2 teams. First team’s leader is Luke, the orphan boy. Second team’s leader is Sophie, she and her younger sister are new in town. They moved from another city. Sophie’s team builds a big castle from snow, it’s amazing!!!!

Luke’s team is “living” in the storehouse. All teams prepare an arsenal of snowballs and shoot them at the enemies  😈 They have strict rules, for example – they fight only during the day. When the sun sets it’s truths.

Luke and Sophie don’t want to be angry with each other. They want to be friends. Together they go skiing, they like each other a lot 😳  One day Luke’s “army” makes some catapults and destroys part of the castle. As the castle goes down…the large peace of snow falls directly on the Pier’s dog Cleo. The fight is over… and Luke is very sad because he blames himself for the dog’s death 🙁

So, Piers loses his dog. Luke comes to Cleo’s burial and plays a peace of music with his trumpet, the same music that was played at his father’s funeral. Piers says that Luke is not responsible for the death of Cleo. They remain friends and honor the lost dog.

After the burial the 2 teams unite and destroy what’s left of the snow castle together! Friendship wins:)

Kolba on Climate Change

Climate change is a change of weather. Unfortunately, it is already happening, it’s not just a fear. It’s hard to deny that today climate change or in other words – global warming is a serious reason for concern. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and other meteorological institutions prove that average yearly temperature has been steadily increasing during the last decades. The Earth’s average surface temperature has risen by 0.76° C since 1850. Most of the warming that has occurred over the last 50 years is very likely to have been caused by human activities. Over 95% of scientists agree that these changes are caused by the Greenhouse Effect. The statistic represents that carbon dioxide emissions increased by around nine billion metric tons over the past decade. Burning large amounts of fossil fuels – coal, oil, and natural gas is the root cause of global warming. The burning releases heat trapping gases in the atmosphere. So all these statistics represent that our world is getting warmer.

Climate change has a lot of negative factors. First of all, the sea levels have been rising, the number of floods in different parts of the world has increased dramatically. It is bad because salt water destroys the crops. Also seawater is contaminating rivers when it mixes with fresh water and the rivers are becoming polluted. That’s why many people are undernourished. Secondly, glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere have started to melt.  Millions of people depend on fresh water supply each year by natural spring melt. And thirdly, it’s ocean acidification. This process is caused by CO2 in the water, and may have negative effects on the entire oceanic food chain. So climate change has terrible effects. It is important to recognize that we should do something that could stop global warming. One of alternative ways would be to reduce CO2 emissions. The government should restrict traffic in the city center or allow Eco-friendly cars only. Also in my opinion countries should invest into renewable energy this way burning of fossil fuels could be reduced. In my view these solutions are the best way to prevent climate change.

To my mind, everybody could promote stopping global warming. I am worried about climate change, so I could motivate my parents and friends to limit car driving and using public transport instead. Also I could become a part of various events or organizations which invite people to adopt a ‘greener’ lifestyles. So there are a lot of ways how to reduce climate change. The most important thing is the desire to save our nature!

LEU students’ multiple opinion article “Why I Hate Politics”

“Frankly speaking, I don’t hate politics. However, if I said that I was interested in politics, I would be lying as well. Just because I personally don’t follow the latest news about politics or know much about the political systems and affairs between various countries doesn’t mean that I despise politics. Just like many young people nowadays, I don’t take part in political activities as well as don’t really have much knowledge concerning politics since it seems something that only serious elderly people can be involved in. To me, politics is like an empty house – barren and boring. But you are still surrounded by it, you cannot live without it. And when you look at this “empty house” up close, you realize how much work has been put into building and maintaining it; you realize that it is something rather complex when you start looking at all its crevices and cracks. Hence, you cannot run away from politics, even though, it might not be of any interest to you at all. Every person is a part of his/her country’s political system, whether they like it or not. That’s why I cannot claim that I hate politics – something that controls so many aspects of my life.” Laura Baniulytė, LEU 2nd year student of English philology

“To be honest, I found the statement ‘to hate politics’ rather extreme expressing my individual concern about political issues. In terms of my own beliefs, it would more accurate to state that ‘I don’t really hate politics, while the rest of the world really prompts me to do it’. Literally speaking, thousands of Lithuanians share either limited or fixed knowledge on the fact that approximately two-thirds of the people being in charge of governmental issues are kind of liars, corrupt people or the ones who will never deliver their promises. I cannot agree more, it is normal hate the ones who cheat and disappoint you all the time. However, the other side of this approach could be assumed as a typical human tendency to hate those who are in power and can take actions on others. It is easy to hate the ones, we disagree with, isn’t it? To that end, it is crucial to understand the reasons why are we constantly arguing about politics. Since, otherwise such ‘displeasure’ with political issues could be deemed as either a stereotypical thinking or an old habit against people who are in power. Thus, broadly speaking, these statements mostly lead to my own perception that I don’t really hate politics. I am aware of the fact that politicians are normally surrounded by affairs and tricky situations making them the worst and cynical people in the world. However, despite this, I’m trying to think critically all the time. In other words, I support convincing ideas which not only look nice to me, but also fit my own beliefs. Hence, I find myself being interested and keen on politics quite often. Besides, I consider such interest as rather useful and compulsory. Thus, such perception leads me to rethink the fact that we have no right to judge and criticize the final product if we were not involved in the process. Therefore, to my way of thinking, I can draw a conclusion that we shouldn’t try to escape from the things which affect our lives significantly or neither hate it, but start caring them from the very beginning.”  Miglė Grašytė, second year student of English philology.Miglė Grašytė's profile photo

Gabrielius Bružas second year student of English philology.

“I hate politics because a lot of politicians care more about their own wallet and acquiring power than about being sincere and reliable to the people who gave them the chance to sit in politician’s chair – to their own nation. The fact that most of the politicians are hypocrites is easily noticeable in every election. Generally, people who candidate for the position in the government would say anything to get that job. Every time the new elections come tons of guarantees for better life are seen. Some promise to lower the taxes, some promise to raise the wages and so on. The promises are always very beautiful but changes rarely come to life. The promises are mainly focused on the working class and the elderly because these people generally yearn for the changes so much that are willing to close their eyes and give their vote for the politician that promises the most. Obviously there are some sincere politicians but they are rarely elected because they do not build air castles of fake promises and appear less grandiose. Therefore, I hate politics because the people who were chosen by the nation are rarely those who truly care about their country and deserve trust.”Gintarė Ragauskaitė.

My first trip to Curonian Spit

Saturday
Parabolic dunes are the old Curonian Spit landscape’s element. 5 thousand years ago when Curonian Spit was just emerging, first low sandy dunes started to appear on the western part of the land. Under the influence of western winds small washouts were formed, and the piles of sand were moved into the land, gradually turning into horseshoe-shaped formations called parabolic dunes. In time they got covered by grass and wood. Their height was up to 30-50 m, but in 16 – 18 centuries mass lumbering opened sand to the wind, resulting in the destruction of the parabolic dunes in many places.

The “Hill of Witches” is made of parabolic dunes

Grey dunes (or Dead dunes) in Nagliai Nature’s Reserve

We rent a house near the Curonian lagoon.

Sunday

Monday
The Parnidis dune. The Parnidis dune is the only place in the Curonian Spit’s National Park where drifting dunes still remain. To the south, Parnidis dune opens the scenery of shifting dunes Grobstas Nature Reserve, and if the visibility is good one can see the sands of the Russian Federation. Scientists estimate that due to the prevailing western winds traveling dunes move from 0.5 to 10 m eastwards every year. Also that day we were watching for geocatches. Geo-catching is a smart phone application when you have to find a box which is hidden by another person. There is a peace of paper in that box where you have to record your name and date. We found four of such boxes. And it was fun!

And then…a long drive to Vilnius.

My first trip to the Curonian Spit was awesome!!! You have to visit the Curonian Spit too!!!

William Shakespeare. By Jogailė Čojūtė

William Shakespeare, was born in 1564 (April 26th), and passed away in 1616 (April 23rd). We celebrated his birthday just two years ago! He is now 450 years old. A little old, right?
However, his spent life time is very important to England and every other in the world. He introduced us to beautiful plays like dramas, tragedies and comedies, introduced us to his beautiful poems, books, and as I’m saying, have you ever read or heard “a Shakespeare”? He wrote lots of good things, no matter his parents were illiterate. William Shakespeare is believed to have influenced the English language more than any other writer in history. It’s interesting that he is also credited with inventing the names Olivia, Miranda, Jessica and Cordelia as well as others.
The most popular William Shakespeare play is the “Hamlet”, it’s longest play and the play responsible for the immortal lines “To be or not to be: that is the question”. The other one is “Macbeth” and “Romeo and Juliet”. And did you know, that Shakespeare invented the saying “Knock, knock! Who’s there?”
Shakespeare with his family at Stratford on Avon, reciting the tragedy of HamletHe was 18 when he married happily with a 26 year old woman, who in fact, was pregnant from him for 3 months. A baby girl was born, then the twins – a boy and a girl. But nobody knows what he did between 1585 and 1592, and those are happen to be called “the lost years”.
But in this year, In 2016, the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death, celebrations will commence in the United Kingdom and across the world to honor Shakespeare and his work.

Announcement from the U.S. Embassy shortened by Juta Kvederaitė 7B

Hello, fellow students from Vilnius Jonas Basanavičius! Our school’s newspaper got a letter from the U.S. Embassy, that offered some special things for us. Today, we will go over what those things are.
The U.S. Embassy is very interested in our project and that our articles directly relate to the themes of their mission.

Because of that, they have several suggestions for our team:

1. They would like to offer to pay for any events that they organize\present, for example – they are currently organizing a tour of street dance group Soul Street Dance from Houston, U.S. who will perform in LOFTAS on March 23 (this performance is free). They welcome us to this event, and will inform us more when it’s time for the group’s visit, as well as other projects that might interest us.

2. A SPECIAL CONTEST!
Our newspaper’s writers or their English studying friends, who don’t necessarily write everyday, would make an article about the climate change and environmental protection, dedicated to the Earth Day, April 22. People who decide to contribute to this project should link\make a reference of some kind to Lithuania. The U.S. Embassy will read their articles, select three best ones, which they would also publish on their social media!!! 😀 😉 😀

Let US know what you think of their projects, as well as if you’re going to enter the contest!

Summed up, on or around April 22, they would be happy to invite all the writers from The VOICE, as well other students who write from J. Basanavičius (max 30 people), to visit the Embassy, where the authors of three best articles would be awarded with books and special Embassy prizes.

Finally, they also wondered if our team would be interested in teaming up with another school, who have a similar newspaper or planning to get one. They are looking forward to working with us more!

Good luck from the U.S. Embassy, The VOICE!Untitled

“End? No, the journey doesn’t end here!“ by Tomas Aleknavičius

Many know J. R. R. Tolkien as the writer of “The Lord of the Rings”. Do all know that he did not begin, nor stop with this novel? Many don’t bother to wander that maybe there is more of the Middle-Earth they learned to love so much just waiting to be discovered. “The Lord of the Rings” was written in 17 years. Tolkien polished his story relentlessly so it would fit his grand design. What is even more remarkable is that the action of the novel takes place at the end of the Third Age of Middle-Earth history. By the way – ages in Tolkien’s writing are periods of time defined by major events such as cataclysms or great shifts of political power. So, how about the Ages that come before? What about those that come after? These would be very good questions to ask. And Tolkien answers. He answers with the totality of all of his life’s work. He gives you “The Silmarillion”. It is a collection of stories that were published after his death in 1977 by his son, Christopher Tolkien. Tolkien, the elder, began writing the stories that would later become “The Silmarillion” back in 1914. He intended them to become an English mythology that would explain the origins of English history and culture. As a scholar of mythopoeic literature he wanted to give his people something that he thought they, as a nation, were deprived of. Although “The Silmarillion” was rejected by publishers over and over again, Tolkien never gave up. As relentlessly as he cared for every detail in his works, so too, he wrote to editors and publishers seeking those that would take “The Silmarillion” out into the world. Encouraged by the success of “The Hobbit” he tried once more, but it was not yet his time. After this last attempt he returned to puffing his pipe and polishing the philosophy and the theology of Middle-Earth to the very end of his life. Several years after Tolkien’s passing, his son, Christopher, edited and compiled the narrative that is now known as “The Silmarillion”. Finnaly in the fall of 1977 the greatest work of J. R. R. Tolkien was published.

“The Silmarillion” is compiled of five parts:

#gallery-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

#gallery-11 { margin: auto; } #gallery-11 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-11 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-11 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

#gallery-12 { margin: auto; } #gallery-12 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-12 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-12 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

4. Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age – or “The Lord of the Rings”.
After the end of the Third Age comes the Fourth Age or the Age of Man, where the Middle-Earth gradually becomes more and more like our Earth, but Tolkien never wrote down more than an obscure definition of the Ages to come. Instead, he left us with “The Silmarillion”. A grand adventure spanning over thousands of years “The Silmarillion” accounts for the fall of the Melkor, the First Enemy, the downfall of Numenor, the greatest kingdom of Men, the retreat of the Elves and the Valar from the everyday lives of men.

I have given you, dear reader, a glimpse of what Tolkien worked on, his entire life. Short and clouded as it may have been, still you might have caught the idea or should I say the reason why I write about this man. What he has accomplished surpasses many of his peers, not to mention followers. Single handedly this man has created a mythological background, languages, cultures, histories that encompass as much as some of our own, real world traditions. One man, in ~60 years has done something that nations work on for centuries. And we have the opportunity to see it, read it for ourselves. Isn’t that amazing? With this in mind, I invite you to journey through the First and Second Ages of Middle-Earth in the next series of articles. I will talk about each of the legends separately and the themes that join them thus forming the underlying base of values and beliefs upon which Middle-Earth is built.

#gallery-13 { margin: auto; } #gallery-13 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-13 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-13 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Get smarter?! with Vakarė Kuklytė “10 Words You Probably Get Wrong”

Words… Without them, we couldn’t do anything… We couldn’t go shopping, eating, all of us couldn’t read a book. Almost everything contains them (except math, duh L… Or maybe… the Petras bought 50 watermelons…),but anyways, here are some of the words, that you need to truly understand the meaning of before using them properly. J

1. Ultimate
What you think it means: The one, the only. The best.
What it really means: The last item of a list.

#gallery-14 { margin: auto; } #gallery-14 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-14 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-14 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

“At the store we will need milk, eggs, cheese, and ultimately, butter!”

2. Nauseous
What you think it means: To feel ill.
What it really means: To cause feelings of illness.

#gallery-15 { margin: auto; } #gallery-15 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-15 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-15 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The object made you ill is nauseous.

3. Enormity
What you think it means: Huge, enormous.

#gallery-16 { margin: auto; } #gallery-16 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-16 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-16 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

What it really means: Immoral or evil.
Simply, it means really evil.

4. Terrific
What you think it means: Fantastic, good.
What it really means: Horrific, to inspire fear.

#gallery-17 { margin: auto; } #gallery-17 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-17 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-17 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

For example, you see a terrific monster, which inspires you fear.

5. Effect
What you think it means: To cause something to change.

#gallery-18 { margin: auto; } #gallery-18 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-18 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-18 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

What it really means: An event that causes a change.

6. Disinterested
What you think it means: Bored.
What it really means: Neutral.

#gallery-19 { margin: auto; } #gallery-19 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-19 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-19 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Being disinterested is stating that you don’t care about something.

7. Fortuitous
What you think it means: Lucky.

#gallery-20 { margin: auto; } #gallery-20 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-20 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-20 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

What it really means: By chance.
It can be good or bad things that happen by chance.

8. Literally
What you think it means: Figuratively.

#gallery-21 { margin: auto; } #gallery-21 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-21 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-21 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

What it really means: Actually.

So let’s imagine you say: “My head literally exploded back then”, then why are you here to tell us that? I mean, your head exploded, like, you shouldn’t even have it on you right now! 😀  🙄

Or, another example: “I literally got your back, bro”.
So, you’re saying this: “I possess your spine, bro”.
I would suggest on remembering this one.
9. Can
What you think it means: What is permissible.
What it really means: What is possible.
10. Bemused
What you think it means: Amused.
What it really means: Confused.
If you are bemused, then you are actually confused.

EXTRA SPELLING WORD! :DDDD

You’re spelling it like this – supposeBly, but that is WRONG.
Spell it like this – supposeDly.
Now, since you’re a pro, go out and impress people with your talking skills!! 😀

Child Labor: a Thing of the Past or an Everlasting Horror? By Armantas Stankevičius

Many think that child labor is nearly or non existent today, since it doesn’t meet the norms of human rights which we have in our modern societies. As much as they are right about the latter, child labor still continues to be a global threat even today.
According to “Business Insider” the number of countries where the level of child labor was “extreme” in 2012 was 76 out of 147 studied Furthermore, even such developed countries as US managed to get 141st spot, which is considered to be a “medium risk” and were on par with Kuwait, Georgia and Cuba. Also, according to the official website of UNICEF, in least developed countries approximately one in four children (ages 514) is involved in child labor. Moreover, according to the data provided by the official website of UN, children are engaged in agricultural labour, in mining, in manufacturing, in domestic service, types of construction, scavenging and begging on the streets.
Others are trapped in forms of slavery in armed conflicts, forced labour and debt bondage (to pay off debts incurred by parents and grandparents) as well as in commercial sexual exploitation and illicit activities, such as drug trafficking and organized begging and in many other forms of labour. Many of these are “worst forms” of child labour as they are especially harmful, morally reprehensible, and they violate the child’s freedom and human rights. Child labour tends to be concentrated in the informal sector of the economy. For some work, children receive no payment, only food and a place to sleep. Children in informal sector work receive no payment if they are injured or become ill,
and can seek no protection if they suffer violence or are maltreated by their employer.

In conclusion, I just want to say that this subject is a global threat that requires more attention than it gets and if you ever come across any form of child exploitation via labor etc. please don’t be a bystander and contact any official organisation concerning this subject.

Reviews: Pentatonix by Ugnė and Friends by Neda

Pentatonix is an American singers’ group from Arlington, (Texas). They sing a cappella, without music, instruments or accompaniment. But it sounds like there are all instruments involved! Amazing:)

Breaking News|reporter: “Know more, live better””

Our school is on fire!!!!! This Wednesday, 11 am. the society of our school was shocked by extra-ordinary event. We‘re burning!!! About 900 people were evacuated. The students of 5-8 forms even missed their coats and schoolbags. Primary school students were strongly disappointed – they cried. These News reached the bigger part of my classmates, during the break in the Technology room. The social worker opened the door and screamed: Run AWAY!!! There was no reason to explain, cause thick grey smoke started to penetrate to our room . We all started to run.
Run AWAY!!! These words like a command didn‘t leave any thoughts in our minds. It looked like stop-motion horror film. The smoke chased us during the running corridor. We stopped when we got outside, but the horror didn’t disappear: we missed one classmate. No one saw her, until someone said, that she is in emergency car. During the accident, two more girls were poisoned by the smoke too.
We were standing on the other side of the road and trembling. I couldn‘t answer to myself as I shook from fear or cold. Thank god it wasn‘t -25*C outside that day. Rescue services started working: firefighters – in the building, doctors – in ambulances, police – stopped the traffic. Finally, after an hour, the fire was extinguished. Slowly, the students from neighbor buildings (where they were warming themselves, thanks to the people and office workers that provided shelter), returned to their classrooms, to take back their things. It was an hour of fear and panics for the smaller kids. The good news: tomorrow will be a day off. All of us must to calm down and make conclusions.

Vegetarian Lifestyle by Juta Kvederaitė 7B

To Meat or not to Meat?

less-toxinIf You Are What You Eat, Does That Make You Dead Meat?
This is written by me, Juta, who is going vegan for about 4 months now. I will pass you the information that I know, I collected and thought about. Will you make the decision to go green or not by my words, I don’t know, but what I do know is that I will definitely make you interested and keep you thinking about it every time you put a poor animal on your plate. Lettuce begin!

Q: What is vegetarianism\veganism?
A: Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish. Vegans are vegetarians who don’t eat or use any animal products (including milk, cheese, other dairy items, eggs, honey, wool, silk, or leather).

Q: Why do humans do this? Aren’t they supposed to eat meat to stay alive?heme-vs-non-heme-iron
People choose this lifestyle for many reasons such as – they love animals, have health issues, and think about the environment, ethical concerns, dislike of meat, non-violent beliefs and economics. It is important that you know why you are going vegetarian, because that will keep you going and don’t give up. Trust me when I say that sometimes you will want to cook some bacon or make yourself a delicious turkey sandwich! But then you will think about the reasons why you are on a meatless diet in the first place, turn around and pick up a delicious apple.
imagesAs for the debate about staying alive with meat – according to many vegan experts, our bodies aren’t made to digest meat. If we eat meat 3 times per day, our system has too much protein, fat. That leads to health problems by time. However, many sources tell otherwise. So, there is really no answer for that. Meat eaters say it’s important, while vegans say absolutely not. In my opinion – meat isn’t necessary, but it isn’t unhealthy to eat it either. I personally dislike the taste of meat, and think it’s wrong to kill animals for food purposes. Just choose for yourself if you don’t have medical complications.

Q: Can I go green if I don’t like vegetables?
A: This question is a popular one. When people hear the word “Vegetarian”, they think that we ONLY snack on cucumbers, lettuces or tomatoes.. And that is incorrect. Yes, our diet does consist vegetables, but we also eat grains, proteins, fruits, fats.
Grains: this food group includes bread, pasta, rice, wheat, oats and barley.
Proteins: includes dry beans, peas, lentils, fortified oatmeal, soybeans, spinach, tofu, soy, nuts (for vegetarians – Greek yogurt, eggs)
Fruits & Vegetables: this section is the center of vegetarianism. “Vegetarians should aim for at least six to eight servings of vegetables and three to four servings of fruit per day” – Loma Linda University School of Public Health. Try finding a solution for your dislike to greens (example: make your own pasta sauce with tomatoes, make a tortilla – use the in stores rounded bases (make sure they have all natural ingredients) with an avocado filling) for this lifestyle you need to try many things and experiment until you find what you like!
Fats: The body requires a small amount of dietary fat to ensure proper brain development, temperature regulation and protection for organs. One serving of these healthy fats might include 1 ounce of nuts or seeds, 2 tablespoons of nut butter or 1 teaspoon of some kind of edible oil.

10 Tips for Vegetarian\Vegan for the first time
1. Before going vegetarian I would suggest to research. Don’t quit eating meat right this second. It doesn’t work like that, and you’ll just mess up your immune system. Take it slow.
2. Talk to a doctor. You need to ensure you’re safe and healthy while doing this. Some people actually need to eat meat to stay healthy! So before making your decision, speak to a professional.
3. Watch documentaries. This is optional, but if you are serious about going meatless or just simply not bothered to google some info and want a more interesting way of learning, this is perfect. I will list some documentaries you can watch (be aware of gory images)

#gallery-25 { margin: auto; } #gallery-25 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-25 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-25 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

4. Don’t be surprised when someone doesn’t agree with you and don’t pressure your friends and family to adapt the same diet. Not everyone wants to go meatless, but it would be cool if you had a friend or a group with you going veg, because it would support and help you to keep going. So find an internet group on social media, and share recipes! You don’t need to bring up your choice on every conversation.new-vegan-food-text
5. Don’t be a bad person, choose this because you want to, not because you want to lose weight or something else. Eat by color, not by calorie.
6. Take a cooking class… or just watch a YouTube video with a veggie chef if you can’t afford the time and money.
7. Eat smart. Just because vegetarians have delicious junk food, doesn’t mean you only eat them. They aren’t a staple.
8. Visit a farm or a shelter. Make a cute piglet or chicken your friend, see how much they show love to you and then think about killing and eating it for one meal. It might change everything you think about meat.
9. Make sure you have enough info about veg life. When someone tries to trash your lifestyle, give them a taste of their own medicine by pointing out the bad stuff about meat eating. Don’t get furious by this, keep calm posture and show your intelligence. I have experienced this many times – I start thinking about screaming and pulling my hair out when a person argues about this, but staying calm and collected will show that you are educated and you know what you are doing.
10. Make a speech for your parents if you’re underaged. You can’t just drop a bomb “I’m vegetarian” and just expect them let you. First of all, they will probably ask ‘why?’ Answer honestly, with the reason or two (health, economics, political view, hate killing animals, etc.). Offer to buy the products and cook them yourself. Look up recipes. Show you are responsible for this and you will look after yourself.

Going vegetarian or vegan doesn’t mean that you will only annoy people while dining out. So, carrots anyone?
Let me know what you think in the comments about vegetarian lifestyle! 🙂

Never laugh at live dragons by Tomas Aleknavičius

Symbols – codes of meaning, used by people in their daily lives, or by authors in their writings. Tolkien’s works are also full of various symbols. Some are simple, just like those we use in our everyday lives. Some are a bit more complex. The two of the most prominent symbols, both, appear in “The Lord of the Rings” as poems. The first one goes like this:
“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“Renewed shall be blade that was broken” – a line describing something all too familiar for a fan of fantasy. A sword. Swords have always been symbols of strength, will, power, honor and sometimes even hope. Equally a weapon and an instrument to protect those one cares about and provide for them a sword is one of the most well-known symbols of our world. So it’s not surprising that it made his way into fantasy writing. But the poem speaks of no ordinary sword. This sword is Narsil, The Red and White Flame, re-forged into Andruil, The Flame of the West, the sword that when broken by Sauron still managed to cut the Ring of the Dark Lord’s finger and destroy his power for a long time. When he returned it was this same sword that called the Men of the West to battle against the darkness of the East one last time. The legends of this sword are deeply rooted in the history of the Middle-Earth.
Another very important symbol is incorporated into the name of Tolkien’s famous novel – “The Lord of the Rings”. The symbol of a ring in Tolkien’s work and its importance was revealed during the council of Elrond, where the encryption on the One Ring was read aloud:

“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,One_Ring_To_Rule_Them_All
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

A ring, as a symbol, has been present in human life for as long as man can remember. It represents eternity, the ever-changing cycle of life. It is also a symbol of power – wise men, priests, bishops, kings and emperors all wore rings to symbolize their influence and strength. The One Ring is no different – it is eternal and grants its master an extremely long lifespan. Upon making it Sauron poured all his malice into it, giving it, and himself, so much more one_ring_to_rule_thempower. Thus, the One Ring, is actually as classical as a ring symbol can be!
These two symbols, the sword and the ring, are in opposition since the very beginning of “The Lord of the Rings”. The ring, in Tolkien’s works, symbolizing greed for power, abuse of it and the sword – the return of the king. In other words, the sword brings order, stability, prosperity, strength, but most importantly – hope. For only a true man, destined for the sword would wield it. Same as only Sauron could use the One Ring to its full potential. So the Ring is made for one singular purpose – to destroy all that the Sword represents.lord (2)
As we know it (SPOILERS), no actual clash of Sword and Ring occurs in the story. But the tension these two symbols generate ignite some very interesting inner conflicts. One of them is Aragorn’s fear of “falling for the ring”. His ancestor, the wielder of Narsil, Isildur, had a chance to destroy the One Ring, but decided to keep it, thus allowing Sauron to come back to power. Aragorn is tempted by the same desire. This temptation becomes his ultimate test if he ever wants to ascend to the title of king.
Another interesting, yet not so much developed conflict centers around the fears of Sauron. Sauron, being a tool more than a character in “The Lord of the Rings” is a main antagonist, but that is really all we know about him. That he is out there, that he is mean, that he must be stopped. And one more thing – he is very, very scared of the Narsil and the man who will bear it. Old wounds do tend to remind of themselves, and Sauron’s wounds are no exception. He remembers very well the cursed sword that destroyed his empire, with a single slash, when it was at its highest! He is very afraid that that will happen again. Because even though he is so powerful and has lived for thousands of years, some of those without a body, he is still so very afraid of death.

A ring for Power. A sword for Hope. The two not always carry these same meanings, even in the works of Tolkien. But for the “Lord of the Rings” they came together, against each other, to spark one of the greatest tales of adventure know to fantasy literature. Now it’s time for each reader to find their own meaning of these or other symbols that Tolkien has hidden in his works. “Fly you fools!”

George Orwell’s “1984”. Book review by Aleksandras Melnik

1984 is a novel written by a famous 20th century writer, George Orwell, and it is his most widely known work.

The plot revolves around a man, called Winston Smith, who lives in an alternative, dystopian version of London. The action takes place (very unsurprisingly) in the year 1984, but the world is very different from the one we know. In this scenario, the world wars never actually end, and all countries unite in to 3 super states.

#gallery-27 { margin: auto; } #gallery-27 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-27 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-27 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The countries are led by totalitarian governments, who have, over the years, created a system of total control. Almost in every room there is a portrait of ‘Big Brother’ saying ‘BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU’, and a TV screen which also acts as a CCTV camera, watching and tracking your every move.
At every time people are bombarded with propaganda, which glorifies: The Party, The Big Brother, The Ingsoc, and Ocianias war achievements. All events of the past are changed to fit the propaganda, all books and newspapers are rewritten or destroyed.
If anyone disobeys the system they are immediately caught (since they’re always being watched), are taken to the ministry of ‘Love’ and disappear.

I really love this book and I think that everyone in the modern world should read it. Though it may be shocking, or even horrible to some, in my opinion, reading it is the only way to prevent these horrible things from happening.

Besides the story is very gripping, you’ll probably read it in a night, and I can promise that it will lead to a lot of curious discussions with your friends.

Don’t forget to comment (especially if you have already read it)

Young Artists’ Club

“Drawing and painting is just what I enjoy. There is something special though, a drug in it that steals your time and immerses you into deep narcosis filled with joy. I love it, so I let it embrace me.

Drawings, paintings, sculptures and other kinds of creative pieces are all forms of art. Art is an expression of the artist : his/hers thoughts, feelings and imagination are the most important components needed to make a beautiful piece of art.

All these creatures belong to my fantasy world. They all have their own stories to tell, some of them are happy stories, some are not, but they all are unique and they know that even in the worst situations there will always be someone who can help them…

I wasn’t ever marked in my childhood as a great painter or drawer. It wasn’t actual for me and I wasn’t very into it. But as I grew older, of course my mother wanted me to understand art and art of art, since I was quite good at doing crafts. So I got into an arts school called J.Vienožinskio art school, just near our pre gymnasium. And I never thought I would enjoy the school so much!! I have found lots of new friends with who I peacefully paint and draw in a school full of nice and experienced teachers. So here are my drawings and paintings. I like composing as realistic as I can on a piece of paper, so what do you guys think? Are they realistic?

The introduction of China by Gang Yue

As it is well known to us all, China is one of four ancient and civilizational countries in the world. In fact, it has a longer history than we have ever known. Because of this, many ancient architectures and all sorts of historical books are often found in different places in China. In China, it is easier for you to find a person than you can in any countries. That is, China has the largest population on the Earth, which, however, also puts great burden on our country.

There are fifty-six peoples (nations) in our country. We get along well with each other and often disasters can draw us closer together. Besides, Chinese food is very famous for its good taste and nutrition. Many people in other countries are fond of it and try their best to cook it. Every year plenty of foreigners from different countries come to China to have a sightseeing. Here you can look around lots of places of interest.

I really hope our country will become more and more flourishing and people will live a happier and happier life. I am a Chinese man and I am proud of being born in China.

Tips for Traveling Abroad by Dovilė Stanislovaitytė

Traveling abroad is a very fun and exciting experience, but if you want your trip to be without any problems, you have to prepare and plan ahead.

The first thing you can do months before your trip is to book your flight and research the place that you want to visit. The second step is to make sure that your passport is valid and if it is not you have to make it. But do not wait until the last minute, because it takes some time to make it. The third step is very important and it is medication. Before your trip you have to ask your doctor about any vaccinations you may need and take them. If you take any medications pack enough (plus some extra) to cover your entire trip. Before packing check the weather to get a good idea of what to pack. Pack an extra set of clothes in your carry-on bag in case your luggage gets lost. Talking about technology try to find places that offer free WI-Fi and turn off your phone’s data feature to make sure you won’t be charged extra while using your phone over seas. It would be a good idea to download apps that could help you while you travel, like Skype or Viber which let you talk with people around the world for free, Trip lingo will help you to learn important phrases in foreign languages, Safety Map Worldwide and Emergency help to ensure you stay safe, because with it you can monitor crime levels while traveling. Also buy converters and adapters so that you can use your electronics if it is necessary. And last but not least is money. Tell your bank that you are abroad so that your card doesn’t get cancelled and make sure that your credit card will work in the country that you are traveling to. It would be a good idea to take out some cash in the currency of the place you are traveling to, in case you need money right away when you arrive.
These are the main things that you have to do before your trip abroad so it would not get ruined.

Do you like traveling? What are the places that took your breath away?;))

“Little by little, one travels far” by Tomas Aleknavičius

“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“The road goes ever on and on” said Bilbo to Gandalf. “Now far ahead the road has gone”gandalf-coin sang Frodo to himself while wandering about the Shire. These words delicately describe the fragile wanting of every hobbit to explore, experience and discover. Yet, that wish remains contained. Mostly, by the greenhouse like conditions of the Shire. Only a handful dared to step further than any hobbit before and… a little bit further.
How could such a world, were the small and courageous triumph over the big and greedy, not inspire entire generations? The evil powers of Tolkien’s world desire power above all other things. They seek to destroy and enslave all other things to get it. And the faith of the world is put into the hands of a couple of hobbits, no taller than a human child. Why? Because they were afraid. Because they were not strong enough. Because they had no powers, no great weapons. Because they dared to take that one little step further. Their journey was long. Their road went far. So far, down from the door where it began…
The Fellowship of the Ring breaks apart at Amon Hen, where they stopped to rest, before completing one and beginning the second, even more perilous part of their journey.. The terrible power of the Ring corrupts one of its members, and the rest are attacked by orcs. From here on Frodo and Sam continue on alone. Two hobbits on a suicide mission in to the heart of Mordor. Two hobbits against a million of orcs. Poor orcs…
But before that they have to pass the ever tricky mountains of Emyn Muil. Long story short – they make it! Straight into the Dead Marshes. Not a lovely place. Not because it’s dead, mostly because it’s marsh-land. Tiresome, dangerous and treacherous to cross. But it serves its purpose and safely leads the brave hobbits to the Black Gates. Here, however, they change their minds and decide to enter Mordor through a “back door”, so to speak. Here I will stop, so not to spoil any more important details, for possible future readers.
As you can guess, it’s not a Sunday afternoon kind of a hike, these two hobbits set out for. They knew that from the day they decided to take it. But did they fully understand it? I doubt it. That is why their determination amazes readers all over the world so much. As most heroes of epic stories they experience one dangerous situation after the other. They lose everything along the way. At one point they even lose hope. Only to regain it with their very last breath of strength.
I only chose this little part, this one line of the entire plot, to share with you one of the most important lessons Tolkien is trying to teach us. “I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay, small acts of kindness and love. – Gandalf “.

Ordinary courage. Simple people. Greatness in a sunset over the sea, not in the glimmering of a thousand swords. To the people of Middle-Earth this lesson associates with the bravery of hobbits. With that first step Bilbo Baggins took, that was followed by Froddo, out into the world, following the call of an adventure burning deep inside their hearts.

Listen to your heart. Where is it calling you to?GandalfWriting

Facebook by Živilė Pstygaitė

FACEBOOK Facebook too. Check it out!

 Waste of your time!
One of the biggest Facebook disadvantages is that it is addictive or can become addictive easily. Once you get connected with your Facebook friends you will realize how frequently you open Facebook and also spend so much time in commenting, viewing pictures of others , playing games or doing other stuff. Many people know drawbacks of using Facebook but can’t stop using it. Many people use Facebook day and night without thinking how much time they have wasted on it, and that they could have done more important work during that time

You can’t keep things personal!
You obviously do not want your personal information exposed to every friend of yours or even to public. On Facebook your personal life updates come to the notice of all your friends and others, and so your privacy is compromised. By the way, any text you put into the status update box is sent to Facebook’s servers, even if you don’t click the post button!

 Account Intrusion

It is no surprise that Facebook is vulnerable to attacks, and several hackers actively alter people’s profile information, on daily basis. There are hundreds of examples of this. Many Facebook and ex-Facebook users can tell you that they noticed change in their profile information while they were not logged in.

Also, there are some things like scams, ability to ruin your life because of Facebook… These were the disadvantages of using Facebook. So what are you thinking now, will you still use Facebook???

Be a volunteer!

1. Volunteering connects you to others
One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks could make a real difference to lives of people, animals, and organizations in need.
2. Volunteering helps you make new friends and contacts. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people. Volunteering also strengthens your ties to the community, exposing you to people with common interests, neighborhood resources, and fun and fulfilling activities.
3. Volunteering increases self-confidence
You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of achievement. Your role as volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity

4. It could be your hobby
A lot of students are bored because they do not have a hobby. The every day routine make them feel depressed and unhappy. Volunteering is a very good choice in this situation, because there you can help somebody and have fun at the same time.
5. Volunteering can provide career experience

Volunteering offers you the chance to try out a new career without making a long-term commitment. It is also a great way to gain experience in a new field. In some fields, you can volunteer directly at an organization that does the kind of work you’re interested in. For example, if you’re interested in nursing, you could volunteer at a hospital or a nursing home. Your volunteer work might also expose you to professional organizations or internships that could be of benefit to your career.

The value of volunteering by Mažena Germanovič

Is volunteering about money? Should we measure it that way? Most people would say no. Volunteering is not about money. Volunteering is about giving, contributing, and helping other individuals and the community. It is working with others to make a meaningful change in the world.
People volunteer for an endless variety of reasons. Many people want to gain experience, acquire new skills, meet new people, or expand their network of contacts as a way to get a new job or start a career. Others just want to help and contribute to create a vibrant society – dynamic, engaged and self-reliant. They do it because it makes them feel good. It is the feeling of satisfaction that keeps volunteers going. Most people think volunteering is just about organizing hundreds or thousands of volunteers for large events but that is not quite true. It is spontaneous acts of kindness like helping a neighbor shovel their walk, giving aid to seniors, or helping an elderly person cross a busy street. It’s the little things we do that make the biggest difference in this world.
Furthermore, I’m also a volunteer and I’ve been volunteering for almost 10 years at the day care center for disabled people in my town (or The Day Care Center for Disabled People?). You may think “wow helping for so many years and getting nothing in return, not even a single penny”. Well, helping and giving is something I always loved to do and seeing their faces light up when you help them or simply talk to them is incredible. Every time when I make a disabled person laugh or smile makes my heart melt and that is when I realized I want to help them see this world not as a dull and miserable place to live but make them feel like they are apart of our community and they deserve to be respected as everyone else. It is an unpaid work that makes you feel satisfied of making someone a little more happy. Giving money for volunteers just undermines the true value of volunteerism. Like the term “mandatory volunteerism”, it misrepresents the meaning and spirit of volunteering. Our society needs motivated, not mandatory volunteers because volunteering is all about helping, not hiring, giving, not taking.

The value of volunteering is much deeper, much more fulfilling and much more important in contributing to a healthy and vibrant community than money can ever measure.

The Book vs. The Film by Gytė Batūraitė

Which is better – the book or the film – is a question that makes both book and film critics angry, because there is no definite answer for this. It is a well known fact that people are divided into two types: the ones, who believe that no film will ever be better than the original book, and the ones, who believe that watching films is more beneficial than reading a book.

However, there are a few of pros and cons for both books and films.

First of all, while reading a book you cannot communicate with people as much as you could while watching a film – you need to concentrate and be in a quiet environment, so that nothing would distract you. Reading, no matter how thick the books is, consumes a lot of time. However, even if the book is thick, that means that there will be more details revealed, the plot will be fully developed and explained. Nevertheless, reading makes you use your imagination, so you can interpret the actions of the character, to visualize how the character looks and understand the whole plot of the story better. And the most important thing – you can read them anywhere.
Nowadays the film industry is taking a big part of our lives, especially when there are so many films that we can watch on television. Films most of the time consume less than 2hours, so it seems more convenient than reading a book. Also, you can do it while doing other things, like drawing, doing homework or something else, and still you would not miss too much of a plot. Moreover, the film gives you the visual appeal, so you know how the character looks, where and on what conditions the action is happening. However, it has a few disadvantages. The heroes can be quite different than you imagined them to be in the original book. Nevertheless, you cannot get into the character itself – you are just an observer, and you do not feel the emotions of the character.

Furthermore, if you want to watch a film you need electricity or the device you are watching a film on (phone, laptop, etc.) to be charged.

To sum up, both watching films and reading books are an interesting way to spend your free time, all you have to do is to choose either one of them.
