Weird Christmas traditions by Laura Stulginskaitė

Caganer (‘Crapper’)

Christmas is celebrated all around the world and every country has its unique traditions. Some of them are very sweet, but others will make you ask yourself: ‘Why?’. Here are some of the weirdest Christmas traditions from around the globe.

Japan. KFC feast
Thanks to a lack of turkeys and smart marketing, a KFC bucket with fried chicken is the main dish at Christmas in many Japanese homes.

Spain, Catalonia. Caganer (‘Crapper’)
Statuettes of well-known people defecating are a Christmas tradition in Catalonia, dating back to the 18th century. The figures symbolize fertilization, hope and prosperity for the coming year. Statuettes can be of regular people or famous celebrities and politicians.

Krampus

Iceland. The Yule Cat
One famous Icelandic Christmas character is the Yule Cat who eats children who haven’t worked hard enough. So, if you have finished all your work before Christmas you are safe. The Yule cat only looks for the lazy ones in old clothes.

Austria. Krampus
Krampus, the terrifying companion of St. Nicholas and one of Austria’s unique Advent traditions. He looks to punish children who have misbehaved this year.

Befana

Norway. Hide the brooms
In the past, people believed witches came out on Christmas Eve to look for brooms to ride on so they hid them. Today Norwegian women still hide all brooms in their house before going to bed on Christmas Eve.

Italy: The good witch
In Italy, instead of Santa Claus, children are waiting for Befana – a kindly witch that hands out presents at Christmas.

Christmas Time. By Jogailė Čojūtė

Christmas is celebrated on 25th of December. Before that, we have a yummy Christmas Eve dinner – the 24th. This is a favorite holiday for everyone, for me as well.

Why I wait for Christmas, is because it’s celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. It is also the holiday when our whole family and relatives gather to enjoy “the big dinner” and peace. I have to mention, that decorating the Christmas tree, hanging lights and ornaments while listening to some classic Christmas songs is the most fun part of getting ready for it…! And let’s not forget the presents, but the biggest present of all, is the mood around us.
Even if the time we celebrate Christmas is the darkest for our eyes, after it, animals and the nature wake up – it becomes lighter and lighter and brighter and brighter and I understand, that it shows, that no matter where you are, or what the time is – there is always hope.
What is your most favorite holiday? And if it’s Christmas, share below what you feel about it :)!
Psssst, and what is on your wish list?
Or maybe you’re on the naughty list?

Animal Protection or a Profit Hungry Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing? by Armantas Stankevičius

Most of you are probably familiar with the organization called PETA ( People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals ) Animal-Rightsthat claims to be helping animals worldwide, but does PETA really help animals or is just a big fake?
For starters, according to the data provided by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer  Services (VDACS) PETA has killed 1,792 cats and dogs during 2013, an average of 5 per day. The 1,792 figure represents 82 percent of all animals PETA took into its shelter that year. In2014, coming from VDACS, VoicelessQuotethe same animal protection group killed 2,454 of its 3,369 cats, dogs and other animals, the vast majority of which were”owner surrenders,” meaning that they’d been relinquished to the group voluntarily. Just 23 dogs and 16 cats were adopted during 2014. As scary as this looks these are only two years, the number of animals killed by PETA since 1998 exceeds 31,000.

Furthermore, longtime PETA critic Nathan Winograd, a well known shelter reform advocate, posted some interesting numbers in his Facebook page.

“ How much money did PETA take in last year from unsuspecting donors who helped
pay for this mass carnage? $51,933,001: $50,449,023 in contributions, $627,336 in
merchandise sales, and $856,642 in interest and dividends. They finished the year with
$4,551,786 more in the bank than they started, after expenses. They did not see fit to use some of that to comprehensively promote animals for adoption or to provide veterinary care for the animals who needed it. ”
To sum up, I just want to say that it is sad that such atrocities are allowed in this modern age and that even with all the evidence in broad daylight nothing is still being done about it.

Tolerance by Aleksandras Melnik

Contrary to a common misconception, tolerance is not forgiveness  and being tolerant doesn’t mean accepting that all people are alike. Simply: being tolerant means to be able to see things from another persons’ perspective.

We should not judge people by their race, religion, gender etc. but more importantly we should not forget to look into the circumstances and motives that those people had. Very often we rush to judge peoples’ actions immediately,  without understanding what causes lead to them doing it.
There is one thing that can not be tolerated – people doing things that they themselves believe  are wrong. If someone knows that something is wrong and still does that, it’s truly immoral and wrong,  this should not be  tolerated under any means.Tolerant-New-Years
But if the person does something for a reason and thinks that it was the right thing to do we should never get angry with him, but instead, try to stay calm and understand  or perhaps even explain our position.
As I mentioned, tolerance doesn’t mean that ‘we’re all the same’, because everyone is different, but through seeing those differences we can understand others and ourselves better. We are also not equal, equal in our rights, yes we should be, but not in our opportunities. It is due to the very little details from the moment that we’re born, which give us some  advantages and opportunities that others don’t have, so we should never think about other people based only on our own experience.tolerance5
Even though, (perhaps) we will never achieve this ultimate goal of equality, we still can and that’s why we should understand that our personality wouldn’t change much, if we were born in other people’s bodies, raised in a different family or lived in some other places.
2To conclude, not all tolerance is right, but before judging we should think if we have all the information and simply try to put ourselves in the place of others. It is the only way that we can build a healthy society and be happy in our personal lives.

And what is tolerance to you?

You should be a classical music lover! by Evelina Bankauskaitė

Nowadays an appreciation and love for classical music is almost lost. Not many people in our generation like such type of music. They prefer other genres. Young people often see it as a very old-fashioned, boring thing. Sometimes they even hate it. There is no doubt that such kind of attitude is extremely wrong and I can prove that. So find some classical tune to listen right now and keep on reading!

Various scientific studies show that listening to classical music has some pretty interesting effects on our mind and body. First of all, listening to classical music can improve our mood and lower stress. It has the same physiological effect of a massage.

Classical music causes positive chemical reactions in our brain that help with symptoms of stress and depression. Also, it helps to ease emotional pain, lowers blood pressure.
Another advantage of classical music – it can improve our sleep quality. According to scientists instrumental sounds, such as harp, piano and orchestra, help us to relax, fall asleep. In fact, it is very appropriate for meditation.
It is said that classical music can boost brainpower. Many researchers have discovered that students pass their tests way better when listening to such kind of music. It is known as the “Mozart Effect.” Those who listen to music take less time to complete tests, get more answers right overall, and gradually improve their IQ.

Who would not want that? 😉

In conclusion, these points show that classical music is very good for us. We underestimate it for no reason. Next time when you have to study put on the piece of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” particularly “Spring”, a piece of Mozart‘s or Debussy‘s. And if you are not able to feel the benefits of that – at least you will look smart and fancy!

Toni Morrison The Bluest Eye. Book review by Kamilė Mačenskytė

This is a story of a young African American girl Pecola Breedlove who grew up at the end of the Great Depression, in a world of hatred, abuse and cruelty.BluestEye

A once beautiful girl now cloaked by the views of the world with the idea of being ugly and her everyday struggle to find inner peace and acceptance, whilst fighting against the physical and mental abuse that comes for the things she has no control over, like the colour of her skin, or the colour of her eyes. The story of a girl who lives with a crippling family who seem not to feel any affection one to another. An alcoholic father, a distant mother, and a teenager brother who constantly keeps running away, because he can‘t stand the life with parents who beat each other. All of this Pecola blames on her ugliness which is not fully comprehensible and obviously visible, but more emotional and felt from aside. One wouldn‘t say that she looks ugly, but more of that she feels ugly. She believes that if she were different, prettier, the whole world would transform. When Pecola finds two friends, Claudia and Freda, her life, so hard and pitiful, finally receives something nice. toniHowever this feeling doesn‘t keep her from giving the constant questions to God, to herself, to faith or anything that is listening „Why?“ „Why was I made this way?“ „Why couldn‘t I be pretty?“ „Why couldn‘t I have blue eyes?“. This is a story of a girl, who was abused and hurt by the society and basic standards of being pretty and being nice, constant disapproval from the society and the White people, who she held so wonderful in her mind, a story of a girl, who drove herself insane with the idea of not being good enough, not being nice enough, not being as the girl that everyone would love, as the white girl. The story of Pecola, an African American girl, who even in the deepest maddest days, was only focused on one and only thought, the thought of pretty, blue eyes.

A Healthy Lifestyle and Day for Tolerance. By Jogailė Čojūtė

A healthy lifestyle

If there were two choices in life, the unhealthy and healthy lifestyle, what would you choose? I’d suggest the healthier…589

Your health is one of the most important things for you, your friends and even for the society. Healthy living leads you to happiness, long life, better relaxation and bigger concentration.

To be healthy, you must have motivation, which is always around you.. If you feel and look better, it also affects your mind to get smarter. You mustn’t eat bad/junk food, and this rule we brake the most often. Try to think, that unhealthy food is fattening and it’s just bad! Even bad for the environment. And bad is bad.
Make sure to get plenty of exercise. Sounds crazy, but after, it will give you more energy. And with allll this combination, you will be healthy, fit and happy. I promise
Day for Tolerance
The official international day for tolerance is November the 16th. On this day, our school made posters with bunch of beautiful stories and slogans, which taught us a lot about tolerance day and the act of tolerance. But what is tolerance?
2Tolerance
Tolerance – the measure of intelligence in a person. It shows, how much you respect others for their unique opinion and thinking. 11Without this element in our lives, I don’t know where the world would roll down! It teaches us to be more polite, intelligent and better at collaborating. And I am very happy, that November the 16th, international day of tolerance – exists.
“Tolerance – the ability to believe, without making others to”.

Alternative energy sources by Dominykas Dautoras

Electricity is very important in the modern world. Most of the devices we use today use electricity in one way or another. The hard part is to generate it. Mankind has invented a lot of ways to generate electricity. using-alternative-energy-sourcesThe most popular way to generate power is to burn fossil fuel. About 81% of the electricity made in the U.S. is made by burning fossil fuel. The problem with fossil fuel is that it is harmful, and is one of the main reasons for causing global warming. When a fossil fuel is burnt carbon dioxide is produced. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, so it directly influences the amount of the sun’s heat that stays in the atmosphere. The only reason that fossil fuels are used by so many countries is because they are extremely cheap to buy and run. In my opinion, fossil fuel isn’t the best solution for this problem. Not only are they dangerous, but also they are not infinite. If we continue using as much fossil fuel as we use today for the next few hundred years, we will simply run out of things to burn. And the shortage of power would lead to a lot of disasters. The best way to overcome this, would be to use other energy sources. There are many alternative energy sources. Hydroelectricity, solar power, wind power are just a few of them. They all use the nature, so if no significant damage t is done to it they could be infinite. Also they cause  no damage to the environment so the place that you live in can be used as an alternative energy source. renewable-energy-imageIf you live in a desert, use solar power. If you live in a tectonically active environment, use geothermal energy. If you don’t think that any of these are useful in your environment, then nuclear power could be a good solution. Even though it is a bit dangerous and produces some radioactive waste it is definitely better than burning fossil fuels.

altsrcs
In conclusion, we should start switching from our harmful and highly inefficient fossil fuel electricity to a much cleaner and more reliable electricity.

What is Cancer? By Vakarė Kuklytė

Probably everyone knows cancer. And no, not the one from the anime called Fairy Tail. Yes, I’m talking about the one, that makes many people die every year. Cancer, also known as a malignant tumor or malignant neoplasm, is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body.

Cancer has existed all the time, it’s just that nobody knew that. Now, why is it called cancer? It’s because in medieval ages, a doctor saw the cancer, and it looked like crab’s legs to him. You will get cancer mostly by smoking, but you can get it in other ways.

Just be healthy, okay?

SU2C-Logo

Basic Cancer symptoms:T
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fever
• Fatigue
• Pain
• Skin change

Colon cancer symptoms:
• Change in bowel habits or bladder function

Skin cancer symptoms:
EY• Sores that do not heal
Lung cancer:
• Coughing up blood

Will cancer be cured?
Actually, no one knows when it will be cured, because whenever scientists say, that they made a cure for cancer, and this time it will work because they cured a mouse that had skin cancer, it is most likely to never be heard of again. But there’s a new method to cure cancer, which no one knows if will cure a human and will be successful. It is called nanocure (at least they call it like that for now). So, let’s say how much a one nanometer is. If you put one million nanometers together, it will make a one millimeter. This method is actually confirmed to work in a few countries, because it cured breast cancer, also confirmed in the Philippines that it cured bone cancer, and now it is being tested with other people to cure lung cancer.efg
How does it work?
There are four stages on how does this cure work:
1. Antibodies “unlock” the cell that contains cancer. Doctors inject golden nanoparticles inside your body. On top of those nanothings there are antibodies, that attach into some places of the cell, called “key holes” (I know, that’s a strange name).Later, the cancer cell grab the antibodies and let them inside.
2. Lasers detonate the cell. From the outside, lasers are targeted to the cell. The rays make the golden electrons oscillate in sync, so the metal starts warming up. After a really short wait, the heat makes the gold melt, making the created bubble of gas explode.
3. The cure gets inside through the holes. Outside the cancer cell there are oil capsules, that have cure from cancer inside of them. The power of the gas bubble exploding make the capsules have holes in it, so the cure gets inside through the holes of the cell.
4. X – rays forbid the tumor cells to multiply. The scientists use a really small dose of them, because the nanoparticles make ray stronger. Because of the x – rays, the DNA spiral intertwines and doesn’t let the cancer to multiply and damage the other cells

Why basketball is the best sport? by Edvinas Matonis

In Lithuania basketball is like a second religion. Everybody from young to old plays it or played it. So I want to talk why basketball is the best sport.

It keeps you fit

5Basketball is great for toning your legs, and arms, shoulders and back muscles also get a workout thanks to the dribbling and passing the ball to the other teammate. Basketball also helps develop good hand-eye coordination.

The fitter you are, the better you’ll play, so doing some form of cross-training helps to elevate your game to the next level and aids in avoiding injury. Swimming, jogging and strength training helps to maintain the best shape for a game of basketball.3

It teaches how to maintain your focus
The game involves a lot of focus. You need to think of the move you’re making, what you’re going to do next, what the other players on your team are up to, and consider where the opponents are and what they’re doing. 4

You can practise individually
The beauty of basketball is that it’s possible to spend a lot of time on your own improving your skills. So long as you’ve got a ball, you can practise ball handling/dribbling and shooting.

It’s social
Team sports are the best way to boost your sociability. In a sport like this, playing as part of a team helps develop a range of social skills and it helps you make a lot of new friends. Because all the players in a basketball team are even, anyone can score winning buzzer beater.

So you want to buy your first car?? tips by Frederikas Pocius

First Car
So you recently passed the driving exam and you decided that it’s time to get a car. Owning your own car has quite a few benefits: you can go around cities much quicker than public transport, you don’t need to wait at bus stops, for some people it’s just a way to wind down, and in general it gives you much more freedom, but there are quite a few aspects that you might not expect to encounter when getting your first car.

Since most teenagers and young adults aren’t exactly rich, buying a second-hand car is the only option and there are quite a few things you need to look out for. Try to study what usual flaws the car you want has or bring someone who has expertise on cars and try to look for these flaws when inspecting the car, finding flaws can lead to a big discount or you might dodge a car that has a huge problem. 23

During the test drive, don’t be worried of pushing the car, rev the engine hard, try to listen to the engine and try to hear if it makes unusual sounds, also make sure the car isn’t overheating, while not driving in traffic let go of the steering-wheel to see if the car goes straight, if the car swerves left or right it might have chassis problems.

A thorough inspection will leave you with no surprises if you decide to buy the car. If you are searching for cars online, try to look for any details, the angle of the pictures, it might sometimes end up that the seller is trying to hide a big scratch or rust. All in all, buying a car is quite a difficult process and it’s a long lasting decision that you will need to live with for quite a while, so buying the right car is very important.

Project Family Tree 5th graders

What is a Family tree?

Most people have heard of Family trees. What is that? Family tree is a genealogical tool which record information from searches into family history. It show which people belong to the family by adding them is a different branches. Some choose to create a family tree with these branches by putting the ancestors as the ‘roots’ and the descendants as various branches. This is not an ideal way of creating the tree unless you already have the details of the ancestor you wish to begin with. Most people beginning from scratch are better off beginning with their immediate family. The first person to be placed on this family tree should be the youngest member of the family. The tree is easier to create from this starting point.

5th graders made their family trees:

Book Characters: “Vibrant personalities with rich backstories” Lord of The Rings part 2 by Tomas Aleknavičius

“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens”

There is something in every book, every story, that makes captives of our hearts and conquers our minds. It gives life to most boring descriptions and plot twists. It makes us feel part of the world we are reading about. Characters!
Isn’t it all about them? Could we have a book full of marvelous descriptions and not a single person? Well, yes we could – they’re called encyclopedias. Now tell me, how many of you read encyclopedias for fun…? I thought so.
Tolkien’s characters are vibrant personalities with rich backstories. They are full of life, passion, courage, greed, power, envy, lust. I would like to introduce you to some of the characters of the “The Lord of the Rings”.
Oh, and if you care – SPOILERS!!! There, you have been thoroughly warned.

The first part of Tolkien’s trilogy is named “The Fellowship of the Ring”. There is a reason why. One of the most important events of this book is the gathering of the Council of Elrond to appoint nine people, representing the free races of Middle-Earth, to destroy the One Ring. They will come to be known as – The Fellowship of the Ring. Coincidence? I think not!

Here they are:

1Aragorn – son of Arathorn, also known as Elessar, was the 16th Chieftain of the Dunedain of the North; he was later crowned King of Arnor and Gondor, the First High King of the Reunited Kingdom. He was a great warrior, possessed great knowledge of the lands of Middle-Earth, and helped the cause of the Fellowship greatly.
Gandalf – the Grey, later known as Gandalf the White, and by many other names, was a wizard sent to Middle-Earth with a single task – to combat the threat of Sauron. By his initiative the Fellowship was formed and the final campaign of the War of the Ring began.
Legolas – was an elf, son of the Elf-king Thranduil of Mirkwood. He was his fathers most trusted messenger and a master bowman. With his keen eyesight, sensitive hearing and excellent bowmanship Legolas was a valuable resource to the Fellowship.
Boromir – was a valiant warrior known in Gondor for his greatness, having already achieved great merit in Gondor prior to the Council of Elrond.
Samwise Gamgee – also known as Sam, was a hobbit of the Shire. He was Frodo’s gardener and best friend. Sam proved himself to be a most dependable and loyal companion of the entire Fellowship, and played a necessary role in protecting Frodo and destroying the One Ring.
Frodo Baggins – son of Drogo Baggins, was, also, hobbit of the Shire. He was and is most renowned for his leading role in the Quest of the Ring in which he bore the One Ring to Mount Doom where it was ultimately destroyed.
Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) – was, guess what – a hobbit! Also, one of Frodo’s cousins and closest friends. He loved boats and ponies and had a great interest in the maps of Middle-Earth.
Peregrin Took (Pippin) – as you can guess, was a hobbit of the Shire. In addition to that, he was one of the Frodo’s youngest but closest friends.
Gimli – son of Gloin, was a well-respected dwarf warrior in Middle-Earth. He was the only one of the dwarves to readily fight alongside elves in the War of the Ring.
So now you know what kind of people live in Middle-Earth. You may now form an idea of your own about what kind of place it is. Before you go remember this – big or small, rich or not so much, all members of the Fellowship had their part to play in Tolkien’s story. Not all of them survived, not all showed courage in the face of danger. In my opinion, that is exactly what makes their story so alive. Not all can keep their faith when the road darkens.

Think before you drive by Dominyka Dovidaitytė

Driving most often refers to the controlled operation and movement of a motorized vehicle, such as a car, truck, or 2bus. 1

Almost all teenagers say that when they are 18, they will attend driving school and will try to get a driving license. But before that important step you should know that driving a car is a big responsibility. A driving license for its owner and for others sometimes could be more dangerous than permission to have a gun. Because a gun is rarely used and more rarely used against the human. But a car is used every day and when a bad driver is in a car it can be very dangerous.
And don’t forget that driving in traffic is more than just knowing how to operate the mechanisms which control the vehicle; it requires knowing how to apply the rules3 of the road. An effective driver also has an intuitive understanding of the basics of vehicle handling and can drive responsibly. Also, a driving license and a car can change human’s life. For me, for example, driving is the best thing right now. I can go wherever I want, when I want and reach my university faster. But of course it is expensive but driving is worth it.

“The Lord of the Rings” book review part 1 by Tomas Aleknavičius

A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities

Many of us read. We read newspapers, textbooks, “Facebook” messages. Subtitles of our favorite shows and so on. But the biggest, most important meeting with reading is when we pick up a book. A book…? You might be surprised. Many of you may be bookworms like me, and have already read dozens of books. But not all of us are like that. Even I was not really fond of long reading sessions when I was younger. But one book inspired me, one book took me by the heart and dragged me across its yellow pages. Actually, it still holds me strong! The book is “The Lord of the Rings”.

1

Elf looks pretty much like this

This book was written by an Oxford University professor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, and it made him famous. Alongside its prequel “The Hobbit” it introduces the turbulent life of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth and throws the reader straight into the “War of the Ring”. Don’t worry, I will not spoil your reading by revealing any important details.
However, I will make an educated guess, and say that some of you have heard of this book. Maybe, you’ve even seen the movies! Actually it has influenced literature, film, music, theater, and many other aspects of our daily lives so much, that we don’t even notice it! Anyone that has played a role playing game or video game, knows what an elf looks like, right?

What if I told you that before Tolkien all elves looked like this

What if I told you that before Tolkien all elves looked like this?

This is only one of the many ways Tolkien has changed the way we view the world around us. He has taught countless people about friendship, loyalty, honor, courage, the gifts of life and death. Bit by bit, if you allow me, I would like to show more of his work, share with you more of his vision, so we, together, could learn to see the world as a bit more magical place.

Benefits of Gaming by Armantas Stankevičius

poster-of-need-for-speedVideo games are often portrayed as antisocial, violent, and as an addictive waste of time that encourages obesity, but what if that is not true and there are ways to prove this belief wrong?uncharted-3 For example, according to a test conducted by scientists from the University of Rochester, people who play action games make accurate decisions 25% faster, which is a great trait to have as a surgeon or a soldier. Furthermore, according to a study published in the journal “Nature”, driving games improved memory, focus and multitasking abilities in older adults. Also, A recent Oxford University psychological study of 5,000 kids found that the ones who played video games for moderate amounts of time — dead spaceless than an hour a day — were more “well adjusted” and got along with peers better than kids who played no games. Last but not least, The negative effects of screens at night aside, video games give people more control over their dreams and decrease nightmares, according to a psychological research out of Grant MacEwan University in Canada. All in all, if video games are not played excessively they have many benefits and are an awesome way to improve one’s self.

Emily Brontë “Wuthering Heights” Book Review by Viktorija Tamašauskaitė

Wuthering Heights, the novel that no one expected to become such a popular book, was published in 1847 and written by one of the Brontë sisters – Emily. There is an interesting story behind Brontë women that caught my eye while researching about the novel “Wuthering Heights”. In the 19th century when Emily, Anne and Charlotte were trying to publish their novels, it was really hard for women to be taken as seriously as men in writing and publishing sphere. So they had to figure out what to do. And they did – sisters wend under the male pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell for a while. And when it was safe enough to announce who they really were it was a shock to all those people who liked their novels. I found it quite amusing because this fact represents not only the attitude towards women at that time but also shows the reader what he or she can expect to find in the book.wuthering heights (2)
The novel “Wuthering Heights” itself, according to the critics (and I agree with them), is a masterpiece of Gothic love that includes moonless nights, supernatural encounters which helps to create the atmosphere of mystery, fear and makes the reader to want to know what happens next. “Wuthering Heights”, if I may say so,represents a passionate, intense and crazy love between Catherine Earshaw and Heathcliff. Love, which seemed doomed from the beginning.
When Catherine was little, one evening her father brought home an adopted child, which he took care of as any other child of his. Catherine and the adopted child, Heathcliff, grew together as their love for each other. Catherine and Heathcliff grew their interest in each other as well. It seemed wrong to love each other while living under the same roof. But when Catherine’s father died and she could be with Heathcliff for eternity, her brother, Hindley, bullied, humiliated him and finally told Heathcliff to go away because he has nothing to offer to his beloved sister. I found it too harsh because Heathcliff only wanted good for Catherine and her real brother was so stubborn that he couldn’t understand Heathcliff’s purest interests. So Heathcliff, after all that humiliation, went away with a belief that one day he could change his status and be more suitable man for Catherine. And he did change: Heathcliff returned as a rich and polished man to Wuthering Heights years later with the plan of revenge. As we can understand, he became not only rich and powerful but also full of wuthering heights (3)anger.
Even though the story is tragic, chaotic and dark we still get the feeling of love which can conquer all. At first this novel might seem a little bit shallow. Yes, that happened to me and I am not proud of it. At first I read the blurb and thought that it would be another story of two people who cannot be together for some reason. But when I read the whole novel I thought to myself “And you thought it would be lame…”. In a way it was about two people who cannot be together because of the social status. But to me it seemed much deeper later. Brontë in “Wuthering Heights” introduced us not only to the feeling of wild and passionate love but also how money and society can change people’s attitudes towards each other and themselves. Money not always brings happiness: it often makes positive feelings go away and instead of those to feel greed and anger.

Well, at the end I would like to mention one last interesting fact: “Wuthering Heights” is considered to be one of the greatest English literature pieces of all as well as Emily Brontë is considered to be one the best writers of 19th century between women and men. And now, after I read one of her books, I will totally read more because I liked everything about “Wuthering Heights”: the idea, the style of writing and etc. I hope you will enjoy reading this novel too. 😉

Students’ thoughts about Halloween / Movie reviews

Pay the Ghost is a 2015 American supernatural horror film directed by Uli Edel and written by Dan Kay. The film was released on September 25, 2015. Running time 94 minutes.
A professor, Mike Cole (Nicolas Cage)  searches for his son who was abducted during a Halloween parade. The movie jumps to the next year when the parents are still looking for their son and starting to hear and see their son reaching out to them from the other world. The professor is able to break into this world and bring back his son as well as the other children that were taken exactly one year ago on Halloween.
I enjoyed this movie because it was very interesting, moving  very shocking sometimes.

♣Halloween is in the top three of my favourite holidays. I’m “shaking in my boots” for Halloween ! I  love these kind of tips, good job ”Dj_Emukas”!
I like pranks and if i do a party a will definitely prank someone. I have loads of ideas for pranks.
For the costume i would choose joker, but the modern one. The one with scars, lots of face paint and a psycho mind (from the ,,Dark Knight”). I love that character, he’s very iconic, in one way he’s funny and in another way he’s creepy. So i think he would make a very good costume! Adomas Gliožeris 7B

♦Pay the ghost review
In my opinion the film is good, but not great. There are some great scenes and there are some strange scenes. The acting is great until the collapsing portal bridge scene.
Two kids ran straight to the portal and come back to the building, but Charlie’s dad some how fall’s off the bridge and Charlie pull’s him up. I think that Charlie physically couldn’t pull his dad up.
Some scenes were confusing, Like the taxi crashing into the only car in the street. In my opinion the film could have been more interesting to watch if it would explain it’s self. Povilas Kvederas 8B

⊗My review of film “Pay the ghost”

Personally I liked this film and the acting, but the film’s plot wasn’t very original, you know where will be jump scares and you can guess what will happen next. I would recommend this film to people who like films : “A Christmas Horror Story”, “Hidden” and “Knock Knock”. I would give this film 6.5/10 because of the plot holes. Kris K

ω A review of the movie “Pay the ghost”

“Pay the ghost” is a horror movie, about a father, who is a literature teacher at a university,  trying to find his son, who is mysteriously kidnapped in a Halloween festival. The movie does manage to create a spooky atmosphere using a creepy 17th century house and a random black bird appearing once in a while. Even though the film is creepy, the plot is “interesting”. Somehow a university teacher is the first one to realize, that on Halloween children are missing and never found, in 400 years. Another unclear thing is the relationship of Mike and Lauren. They seem to have separated after Charlie went missing, but rejoined after both of them had a hallucination of Charlie. Overall the movie has its flaws, but if you have nothing else to do it is not that bad. And if you don’t like horror movies or thing that this movie is a disaster, you can still find the comical part of it. Domimykas Dautoras 8a

η Halloween is the festival celebrated on 31 of October which is one of my favorite festivals in the year. This festival is very interesting because of its unique exclusivity. People dress up like monsters, ghosts, pirates etc. Children go out in the streets and go trick or treating to their neighbors. I enjoy Halloween so much that I even celebrate it in the small village where my grandparents live. We celebrate Halloween there because it gives a perfect atmosphere for Halloween . On Halloween we look like freaks, we carve pumpkins, dress up like zombies etc. When we go out for trick or treating we go to different houses, knock on windows and things like that. We actually don’t ask for candy, instead we give people something. For example toilet paper…  and it’s really fun. There were so many reactions that one time a man was so scared that he didn’t want to talk.  It’s sad that Halloween is banned in Lithuania ,but still I enjoy it so much that I keep celebrating it each year. 😀  Simonas Jurkynas 8B

I celebrated Halloween because it is very fun and entertaining festival. Every year we  dress up as various monsters and go asking for sweets.Usually people are friendly and give us some candies or money, but there are some people who don’t give us anything and just angrily close the doors. This year I am going to be a vampire.I love Halloween because I  can meet with friends at a party and have some fun. Each year I and my friends invite as many people as possible and pick the best costume.Winner get’s one kilogram of sweets.
Simas B. 8a
♠I think that Halloween is a great event for people , why ? because it’s a good way to spend your own time with family and friends  during this festival you can see a lot of beautiful costumes and admire different pumpkins.I love this festival because you can scare people and get  a lot of candies. In my opinion it is a great feast:) Danilas
ψ I think Halloween is a very funny and at the same time a little scary feast. Though I haven’t celebrated Halloween for two years, I remember painting my face, wearing scary masks and asking people for candies with friends. For me the best thing about Halloween is hanging out with friends scaring people and having lots of great time. Another great thing about Halloween is once you get home, you have lots of candies to eat and you also get some money to buy even more candies ! So I think Halloween is all about having a great time with your friends, lot of candies and pain in the stomach after eating too much of them… Karolis

ø  Hey guys !  Films. I think everybody like watching films in autumn because there aren’t much to do when it’s raining outside. So I’m going to share with you my opinion about film called “Pay the ghost”.

Maybe it could sound a little bit scary, but film isn’t the horror movie. It’s a fantasy, thriller and sometimes you can start shaking because there are some scary parts in it.
So the film is about, how one year after Mikes young son disappeared during a Halloween carnival, he is haunted by eerie images and terrifying messages he can’t explain. Together with his wife, he will stop the mystery and find their son-and, in doing so, he unearths a legend that refuses to remain buried in the past.
At first I thought that this film will be the usual horror movie, but when I started watching it I got interested and involved in it. It’s such a good story. And I think it is really a good idea to watch it if you are having a Halloween party, because this story is related to Halloween
And of course I recommend it to you ! Smiltė 8b

I usually celebrate Halloween with my friends It is a holiday which is not very big thing in our family, so my parents don’t celebrate it. In my opinion this is a very fun holiday  when you can be who ever you want. This years party was THE BEST of all️.  Guostė 8a

♣ Pay the ghost” where do I even begin?

First of all the main cast: Nicolas Cage as Mike (dad), Sarah Callies as Kristen (Mike’s wife),  Jack Fulton as Charlie (son) and Lyriq Bent as Jordan (police officer).
There is no synergy between the main cast at all and Nicolas Cage’s acting was just like the story of this movie- dull and unoriginal, just like all of other Nicolas Cage’s performances in his latest films. It’s like he didn’t even try to show any emotion in this film. But without that I don’t have a slightest problem with the cast of the movie. I was surprised that I even liked the acting of Lyriq Bent as the police officer because for me it was the only thing that motivated me to watch this poor excuse for a film. When I got the cast out of the way I can begin to tell you the horrible story of the movie.
So… Nicolas Cage is an every day dad for Charlie that works as an English teacher, who decides that its a good idea to go to a Halloween carnival when its dark and spooky with his son Charlie. But in the carnival Charlie told his dad something really spooky that they needed to “Pay the ghost” and then Charlie disappeared into thin air… Really? That is the best way to start a film? We didn’t even get to know the character more before he disappears into thin air. But after this moment in the story the  movie becomes a generic horror story with nothing interesting at all, I mean AT ALL… The movie spices up a little bit when they started to throw at us tons of spooky jump scares, but wait! The jump scares were not scary at all… The movie should scare us with it’s atmosphere and tension, but not with flashing a scary picture at us for half a second to scare us. I’m not going to giveaway the ending of the movie, but don’t get your hopes up because it’s Cliche and not interesting just like the whole plot of the movie. So…. Yeah, the movie is just another piece of crap with Nicolas Cage’s name on it. I wouldn’t even wish for my enemies to see this film because it is THAT bad. So my final score for this movie is a 3/10 because of its horrible and Cliche story. The only thing that saves this movie for being a 2/10 is the acting of Liriq Bent, it’s the only good thing in this movie and I’m not kidding. Period… Matas Karūnas 8B
♥ The Halloween party of 8a
Every year, the “A” eight graders celebrate the Halloween just like most of the people. This year we did it pretty early – the 16th of October. But it was such a blast! 
There was music, snacks and we always order pizza whenever we are partying. We had a such a good time playing games which really increased our creativity: every group of people got a scary story and they had to prepare an acting performance. And all the other stuff, but mainly I enjoyed dancing like there’s no tomorrow.
And we can’t forget about the most important thing of the evening – the costumes! We had absolutely all spooky creatures – zombies, dolls, skeletons, angels, vampires and even tanks! 😀 (Shout out to my friend Dominykas!). Costumes are my favorite part because it creates the atmosphere around us and it is very interesting to see others appearance that took them a long time to make.
By the way, I was a ballerina for this year’s Halloween if you’re interested! If you still don’t know your costume, make sure to check my post of Halloween costume ideas. Comment below if your class is doing anything for Halloween…. I hope you have a spooky and a mysterious Halloween.. Jogailė 8a
I have seen the movie „Pay the ghost“ and I would like to express my opinion about it. This is only film that i have seen about Halloween. It impressed me very much. There were many scary moments and that I was shocked by all the sound effects and the film was very gripping. Jump scare was the most thrilling. Ewen though I understand it is a movie the kidnapping scenes were too realistic so I was happy it was just a movie. The tension disappeared when the father rescued his sun from the ghost’s house . I liked music that helped create terrifying atmosphere. I would like to see more action scenes in the film, as I like a lot of action actually. Also I liked the actor who played daddy, because he was very strong, smart, brave, sporty. One scene was very interesting, where it showed how boy lost his memory about what had happened in the ghost’s house. In my opinion, it happened because the boy was too scared. Horror films usually have happy end. I knew this film would also have happy end. Irvinas Gedraitis 8a

♠  I’m always waiting for this day. It’s kind of Christmas for me :D. And I begin planning my suit 2 months before this celebration. Usually I am creepy, or scary thing. I just really like to surprise people with my look. When I was younger, i always went with my cousin to all my street houses, to get candies from people. Then, when we got back home with a lots of candies, we watched scary movies or just told stories to each other. But now, when I’m not a child, we organize parties with my class. Everybody dress who they want to be, and then, we are playing games, telling something, laughing, just having a good time, and at those moments I remember why I love my class so much. Sad, but for me this year is last in this school. And I am going to miss my classmates soo much… :/ Augustė Kriaučeliūnaitė 8a

PAY THE GHOST This movie is about a father, (played by Nicolas Cage), that loses his son and by searching for him, he finds a pattern, of three children disappearing every Halloween, that are never found again, what leads him to the discovery of a ghost that is kidnapping them…
I did like the movies atmosphere, and its grim tone, but the plot wasn’t very clear, especially all of the northern mythology, and the movie relied on quite a few cheap tricks, like jump scares, witch were way to easy to predict.
Generally I liked the movie, and recommend to watch it, if you want to watch something for Halloween, but don‘t like movies that are to scary. Aleksandras Melnik 8a

You ask me, why I like Halloween? Probably it is not really important holiday in Lithuania, but still some people celebrate it. It is a very nice event, because all people who celebrate it wear interesting costumes, masks and paint their faces. Kids ask for candies and goes to  houses and flats. And for example in America, where Halloween is very important holiday and most of the people enjoy it, they have festivals, interesting events, they all together go to streets and etc. So Halloween is really interesting and fascinating holiday. Simas Montvila 8b

◊Why I love Halloween
I love Halloween because:
1) You can be whatever you want, super hero, a robber, etc. I think it is always fun to imagine that you are a superstar or the scariest which in the world.
2) It is a day when you can wear crazy makeup and don’t feel embarrassed. I just love doing scary makeup that I wouldn’t be able to wear every day or even sometimes.
3) You can be awake all night with your friends. That’s cool because who doesn’t love to watch scary movies all night.
4) We can’t forget about the candy, it is just the best tradition ever, I mean like that is the best part of the Halloween, you just don’t need to think about how much candy you just ate because you won’t stop.
That’s why I love and always celebrate Halloween, why do you like Halloween?:) Emilija Linkevičiūtė 8b

Advice on Halloween’s dress up from Dj_Emukas

It’s Halloween

Your friend is throwing an awesome Halloween party, but you have no idea what to wear? Maybe your just too lazy and don’t want to think? Or maybe you just don’t want to be dressed as someone or something, because you think it’s lame. Well, then these are the basics:

1. Dress in black or any other Halloweenish color. It will create your default look.Glow sticks
2. Wear a cloak. Or anything with a hood. Let it cover your face and you will look more mysterious.a cloak
3. Glow sticks are a good accessory! You can take one or two colors and use only them. Actually, just play with the colors. Everything can work!
4. If you have a friend, who also forgot/is lazy, then this is a great opportunity! You can both dress the same. You can dress in the same or opposite colors. You can dress as opposite personalities. Again, anything can work.
5. Dress in your school uniform. But not just your school uniform. Make yourself look messy. You can pretend to be little Joker.BatGirl-and-Little-Joker
6. Act. You don’t always need a good costume. Sometimes you just need to get into character.

And maybe you are the one hosting the party? You need some decorations, but your on a budget? Maybe, you just don’t want to clean up much afterwords? Here are some easy decorations:

7. Make a cobweb. It’s easy, the only thing you’ll need is some old yarn. Why old? Because it’s more likely to be dusty and torn. So, make a snowflake out of 4 strings. Lay that on the ground. Then tie a maximum of 4 other strings in a circle between them all. It’s important for all of it to be loose. So when you attach it to a corner it’ll look more realistic.cobweb
8. Use lots of candles. You can put them in mason jars and maybe attach little cobwebs to them. Use red candles, so when the wax drips down it’ll look like bloodmason jars
9. Make a traditional jack-o-lantern. It may take a while, but if you make it the main object, it will look nice.

And lastly:

10. Always, and I mean always…No, I’m not gonna say “Be safe, bla bla bla…” or “Have fun bla bla bla…”. No, I’m telling you to do a prank. Just do it. Halloween isn’t Halloween without a prank. Prank someone or prank EVERYONE. Even if it’s the last thing you do.

G.Orwell’s Animal Farm book review by Alex

Animal farm

#gallery-17 { margin: auto; } #gallery-17 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-17 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-17 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Hello, I decided for my first time to write about ”Animal Farm”, “Animal Farm” is a classic work by George Orwell and a noted piece of literature.

This novel is about a farm of animals, which are treated cruelly by their owner and decide to revolt. But it is far not a fairy tale and very much resembles our own life and political situation.

I recommend this novel, not only because it’s interesting to read and it has quite a few surprising plot twists, but most importantly it gives us a very good view on today’s world and especially the Soviet Union and the Russian revolution. It will help you to understand the idea of communism, and why it did not work in the Soviet Union. The novel lets us see the events of the past century depicted the little animal society, which makes the a lot clearer and easy to understand.

You should definitely read this book it is very easy to read, but it has a powerful message and makes you see thing that you never thought about. I promise you will enjoy it and you won’t be able to stop thinking about it when you finish.

Art Project “My Favorite Teacher 2015”. 5th graders

Teacher’s Day is coming, our students present you their teachers, can you recognize them??:))

Jogailė’s thoughts about Teacher’s Day:

“So what does it mean to be a teacher today? What should they be like?
In my opinion, the first thing a teacher should master is enthusiasm. How beautiful it is to listen to someone who likes his job and loves the subject. They want YOU to discover awesome and different lanes of education… plus motivate you.
To do that,  teachers should be self-motivated, which means they have to stay positive, energetic and confident! Three in one!
What are your opinions on teachers today, little internet people? Comment below!” 🙄

Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre review by Audrė Baublytė

Hello everyone, so this time it’s Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre 😉

#gallery-21 { margin: auto; } #gallery-21 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-21 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-21 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Characters:
• Jane Eyre is an orphan and the main protagonist of the story. At the beginning of the book she is an isolated ten year old living with her mean aunt and cousins. Her cousin John Reed bullies her. Later she gets sent out to Lowood school. Then she gets a job at Thornfield, falls in love with Edward Rochester, finds out he has a crazy wife and finally marries him.
• Sarah Reed is Jane’s mean aunt, who raises Jane until she was ten years old.
• John Reed is Jane’s spoiled cousin .Later Jane finds out that he committed suicide.
• Helen Burns was Jane’s best and only friend at Lowood School. Later Helen died in Jane’s arms.
My personal opinion:
I didn’t like this book very much. I think it was a bit too slow and therefore a bit boring. Also I couldn’t relate to the story or the characters and that also made me dislike the book a bit. I would recommend to read this book two times, once as a child (teenager), and again as an adult because I think as an adult you would understand this book differently and maybe relate a bit more to the story and the characters.

2. Use nail polish to identify different keys.
3. Put all your wires in toilet paper rolls and put them in an empty shoe box. That way, they wont get tangled.
5. Use a spring from an old pen to keep your charger from bending or breaking.
7. Put your straw through the tab to keep it from rising out of your drink.
8. Take the annoying sliver of soap from an almost used up bar and stick it onto a new bar
10. Take an empty tissue box and attach it to a full tissue box with rubber bands. Then as people need a tissue, they can throw it away in the empty box. Works great if you have a cold.
